Adrian Borland And The Citizens - Alexandria (1989)

Eu ainda fico em dúvida se este disco ainda é melhor que o segundo sob o nome dos The Citizens. Há canções simplesmente perfeitas neste disco, algumas melodias simples mas de uma audição incrível; é o caso de Rogue Beauty. Dedilhados simples nas guitarras, nada tão complexo no baixo ou na bateria mas ainda assim uma música magnífica. Community Call é uma canção mais “agitada” (particularmente, uma canção que gosto muito talvez pelo sax que acompanha toda a música) e mais dançante junto a Crystalline. No Ethereal. Esta é sem dúvida uma das melhores do disco. Havia ouvido ela primeiramente num bootleg que circula pela net (e que algum dia estará por aqui) e nele eu já havia percebido a grandiosidade desta canção, talvez mais bela em sua versão de estúdio do que ao vivo. Mais uma vez, melodia simples que soa perfeitamente com a voz do Adrian e uma bela letra. A acústica Other Side Of The World não deixa a desejar em relação as demais do álbum. Shadow Of Your Grace é o tipo de música que me faz lamentar-se por este artista ter partido tão cedo, onde vejo o quanto a música perdeu em 1999. Reparem na serenidade desta música, desde a batida do violão às simples notas na guitarra. Esta é uma das canções onde podemos notar a maestria de Adrian Borland como compositor. Este disco é o primeiro de sua carreira solo, uma vertente musical totalmente diferente da que ele seguia com o The Sound mas não menos apreciável. E é este conjunto de melodias e arranjos simples regados com ricas letras que vos transmito hoje.

>>> I’m still in doubt about how the best album under The Citizens name. There’s songs just perfects in this album, some simple melodies with an amazing hearing; as Rogue Beauty. Simple fingerings in the guitars, nothing so complex in the bass and drums but still is a magnificent song. Community Call is a more “agitated” song (particularlly, a song that I like so much maybe because the sax that play all the song) and more dancing like Crystalline. No Ethereal.  This is undoubtedly one of the best songs of this album. I’ve heard it in a bootleg that circulating the internet (some day will be here too) and I realized the grandiosity of this song, in this album maybe better than the live version. One more time, a simple melody that sounds perfectly with the Adrian’s voice and with a beautiful lyric. The acoustic Other Side Of The World leaves nothing to desire like the other songs of the album. Shadow Of Your Grace is the kind of song that makes me lament for this artist have died so young, here I see how the music lost in 1999. Note the serenity of this song, from the acoustic guitar to the simple guitar fingerings. This is a song where we can see the maestry of Adrian Borland as songwritter. This album is the first of his solo carreer, a different musical side of The Sound but not less aprreciable. And this group of simple melodies and arrangements drizzled with rich letters I delivered to you today. R.I.P. Adrian Borland.

Lowlife - Rain EP (1985)

Ok. Esta é uma banda que com toda certeza me chamou a atenção nos últimos meses (tenho escutado repetidamente o Diminuendo e o EP Rain). Já havia me deparado com ela outras tantas vezes pelos becos obscuros da internet mas eis que um dia me aparece esse EP como um vídeo recomendado no YouTube. E é este que posto aqui hoje. E é este também que tenho ouvido muitas vezes na semana nos últimos 3 meses, acho.

Lowlife foi remanescente de bandas como a Dead Neighbours (Craig Lorentson e Grant McDowall) e o Cocteau Twins (Will Heggie) e, como foi dito no blog Crispy Nuggets, é/foi (numa tradução direta) “a banda mais subestimada de todos os tempos.” Por quê? Porque um som como este não recebeu a merecida atenção (algo aqui me fez lembrar o The Sound...); não fez o sucesso que merecia. E com merecia quero dizer, ter se espalhado pelos quatro cantos do mundo. Este é um som com influências gritantes do gothic e do post-punk, com umas sonoridades meio ambient (minha opinião, claro), acho que por causa das notas das guitarras diluídas nas batidas progressivas da bateria. A voz do Craig Lorentson é de uma audição louvável, notas graves que combinam perfeitamente com a melodia. A linha de baixo é uma característica marcante, talvez não tanto neste EP quanto no álbum Diminuendo, mas ainda assim percebemos o quão bem executado ele é. Segundo o El Sendero Oscuro, o nome veio de uma música do PIL chamada Lowlife. Destaco aqui a melhor deste EP para mim: Sense Of Fondness. Não percam mais tempo e baixem este som digno de ter nascido nos anos 80. :]

>>> Ok. This is a band that surely called me attention in the last few months (I’ve listened a lot to Diminuendo and the Rain EP). I already encountered with this band some times in the obscure alleys from the internet but here it appears to me as a recommended video in YouTube. And is it that I post today. And is it too that I have heard so many times in the last 3 months, I think.

Lowlife was remaining of bands like Dead Neighbours (Craig Lorentson & Grant McDowall) and Cocteau Twins (Will Heggie) and, as said in CrispyNuggets blog, are/was “easily one of the most under-rated bands of all time.” Why? Because a sound like this do not get the attention it deserves (something here makes me wonder in The Sound); didn’t have the success that them deserved. And with deserved I mean, spread their sound to the four corners of the world. This is a sound with glaring influences of gothic and post-punk, with a little taste of ambient (my opinion, of course), maybe ‘cause the guitar notes diluted in the drum beats. The voice of Craig Lorentson is a praiseworthy hearing, deep notes that fits like a glove with the melody. The bass line is a striking feature, perhaps not so much in this EP as in Diminuendo album, but we still realized how well played it is. According with El Sendero Oscuro, the name was taken of a PIL song called Lowlife. I point out the best song of this EP for me: Sense Of Fondness. Don’t waste more time and download this sound that was worthy of being born in the 80s. :]
