Film Noir - Never Ending Dream (1986)

Ahhh... a Film Noir. O que falar sobre esta belíssima banda? Bem, de início, posso dizer que a Film Noir foi a precursora do movimento 'dark' (o new wave, post-punk, gothic rock...) na Grécia, junto a bandas como Flowers Of Romance, South Of No North e Metro Decay. O som deles pega muitas influências das bandas de nome da época, como o The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees (a própria voz da Mariella lembra muito a da Siouxsie) e a X-Mal Deutschland.
A banda se formou em Atenas (Grécia) por volta de 1985 e, teve suas primeiras aparições no Cat's Meow Club (Syggrou Avenue, Atenas, Grécia). Em 1986 lançaram o LP Never Ending Dream, pela Wipe Out! Records, que foi um grande sucesso na época; que originou algumas apresentações em shows e nas TV's gregas. Em 1987, eles tocaram pela última vez com a ilustre presença da Mariella, junto a Flowers Of Romance e Scoria, onde Mariella cantou a última canção da noite com a Flowers. Pouco tempo depois, Mariella deixou a banda mudando-se para a Austrália para seguir com a carreira de modelo. Em 1990, a banda lançou ainda outro álbum, intitulado Portrait Of The Child, que não obteve o mesmo sucesso do primeiro LP com a voz de Mariella. Em meados dos anos '90, Mariella faleceu vítima de câncer.
O S. Adam (Spyros Floros) foi formador da banda grega de punk rock Ausschwitss e, tocou também com a The Hands Of Cain. Em '85 se uniu ao Film Noir; O guitarrista Costas Sokialis trabalhou como produtor de algumas bandas; o baixista Kyriakos Coti foi membro de algumas bandas mais desconhecidas na Grécia e depois tornou-se produtor de bandas como Flowers Of Romance, Stereo Nova, entre outras.
As canções deste álbum são indescritíveis. Excuse (how can anyone know me, when I don't even know myself?) é uma ótima música de abertura, mostrando bem a sonoridade da Film Noir. Drowned Kiss me remete ao The Cure, com um som mais gótico, um clima mais pesado... Decry é uma das mais belas. Com aquele strings no início que prossegue durante toda a música, o arpejo de introdução da guitarra, e a 'cozinha' entrando de forma majestosa... Finalmente, a voz da Mariella, que soa perfeitamente ao som dos demais instrumentos. As demais canções, é escutar para avaliar. :)

>>> Ahhh... Film Noir. What can I say about this amazing band? Well, at first, I can say that Film Noir was the precursor from the 'dark' movement (the new wave, post-punk, gothic rock...) in Greece, along with bands as Flowers Of Romance, South Of No North and Metro Decay. The Film Noir's sound takes a lot of influences from many bands from era, as The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees (the own voice of Mariella is very reminiscent of Siouxsie) and the X-Mal Deutschland.

The band was formed in Atens (Greece) around the year '85 and had their first appearances in the Cat's Meow Club (Syggrou Avenue, Atenas, Grécia). In '86 released the LP Never Ending Dream by the Wipe Out! Records, that was a great success in epoch; that originated some presentations in the greek TV's and other shows. In '87, they played the last time with the ilustrious presence of Mariella, along with Flowers Of Romance and Scoria. Mariella sang the last song from night with the Flowers Of Romance. Before long, Mariella left the band and moved to Australia to continue with her modeling career. In '90 the band released another album, called Portrait Of The Child that not obtained the same success of the first LP with the Mariella's voice. In the mid of 90s Mariella died of cancer.

S. Adam (Spyros Floros) was the first man from the greek punk rock band Ausschwitss and played with The Hands Of Cain too. The songs of this album are elusive. Excuse (how can anyone know me, when I don't even know myself?) is a great opening song, show very well the sound of Film Noir. Drowned Kiss reminds me The Cure, with a more gothic sound, a more heavy weather... Decry is the best from this album. The keyboard strings in the start that continues during all song, the guitar arpeggio and the bass and drums entering majestically... Finally, Mariella's voice, who sounds perfectly with the other instruments. The other songs are for your evaluation. :)

Mary Goes Round - Sunset (1989)

1986, Rex Club, Paris. Foi a primeira aparição de Jérôme Avril e Cécille Balladino (convidados pelo Sonic Youth), com o nome da banda intitulado Red Light na época e, ainda, contando com Maurice (baixo) e Gilbert Correy (bateria). Este foi o primeiro e único evento da banda, até terem a oportunidade de ter uma canção lançada na coletânea Unreleased Volume I, em '87. Nesta ocasião, foi gravada The Shelter, única canção gravada em estúdio com um baterista e o nome Mary Goes Round foi escolhido.

Até aí, nada de tão animador acontecera; foi quando, um ano depois, tiveram a oportunidade de lançar outra nova música na coletânea Unreleased Volume II. Então, foi gravada The Nightmare, com uma drum machine para substituir Gilber Correy, ausente no momento. Depois disso, eles decidiram gravar seu primeiro album, sem Gilbert, que definitivamente deixou a banda. Foram gravadas 5 canções demo e distribuídas pelo selo New Rose, famosa gravadora francesa da época. Então, o mini-LP Sunset foi lançado.

A Mary Goes Round tinha fortes influências da Asylum Party e Little Nemo, que eram bandas da cena francesa que, junto a outras bandas menores, estavam dando origem a um pseudo-movimento chamado de "Touching Pop". Seria algo como uma "evolução" do darkwave, mesclando o estilo com o pop; que por fim resultou em algo não tão distante da origem.

O Mary Goes Round se dissolveu após a saída de Cécille e do baixista Thierry.

O mini-LP original Sunset, foi lançado com apenas 7 músicas. A versão que postarei aqui é a do CD, que tem um adicional de 5 músicas e foi lançada em 1990. Não há muito o que falar sobre o Sunset (mentira, há sim). Nele, a banda está no início do movimento citado acima, onde o darkwave e o coldwave ainda estão bem pesados nas músicas. O album em si é altamente viajante bom de se ouvir, a começar pela primeira, Mary Sleeps Alone, com aquele efeito de música pra dormir Music Box, e falando sobre os enigmas do por que da Mary (personagem fictícia de algumas músicas da banda) dormir sozinha... 

Dark Times, realmente, me parece tempos negros; onde não se entende o por que de ter matado um certo alguém e isto transforma-se numa paranóia. E sim, a sonoridade da música ajuda a baixar o clima da canção, com uma batida bem monótona e progressiva.

The Night e The Promised Land, são músicas mais dançantes, onde as guitarras são bem vivas, assim como a drum machine, que ajudam a ter um som mais forte, mais vivo...

The Great Desire é uma música mais parada, porém, não menos interessante que as anteriores. Com uma programação de batidas mais trabalhadas e novamente a guitarra dando uma vida a música.

Tearsdrops Again. Essa música é talvez a melhor do álbum para mim. Tentem escutá-la e não  se deixar envolver. Tentem escutá-la e não sentir, no mínimo, que seus pensamentos voaram pra longe por uns tempos... O instrumental dela é bem trabalhado; a linha de baixo progressiva, a guitarra dando uma dose a mais de psicose.

A sonoridade de The Nightmare, retrata bem o título da música e a sua letra, um tanto macabra. (?)

Mary In The Sky e On The Sea são músicas mais trabalhadas; diria melhor arranjadas.

The Shelter é uma música bem empolgante, com sua batida progressiva e uma sonoridade mais darkwave.

Another Sunset é a melhor música para se fechar o álbum, com uma letra diferente das outras do álbum, ela se diferencia não só na letra como também na sonoridade. Algo meio coldwave/synthpop, sem o peso do darkwave.

>>> 1986, Rex Club, Paris. Was the first appearance of Jérôme Avril and Cécille Balladino (invited by Sonic Youth), under the name Red Light and with Maurice (bass) and Gilbert (drums). This was the first and only band show, until they have an opportunity to release a song in the Unreleased Volume I compilation in ’87. In this occasion, The Shelter was recorded, the only studio song with a drummer and the name Mary Goes Round was chosen.

After a year, they have another opportunity to record a new song in the Unreleased Volume II. So The Nightmare was recorded with a drum machine to replace Gilber Correy, absent at that time. After this, they decided to release your first album without Gilbert, that definitely left the band. Was recorded 5 demo songs and distributed by the New Rose label, famous label at that time. Thus the mini-LP was released.

Mary Goes Round had strong influences of Asylum Party and Little Nemo, bands of the french musical scene that along with other small bands were giving rise to a pseudo-movement called “Touching Pop”. It would be something like na evolution of darkwave mixing with pop, which ending in something not so far from the origin. The band broke up after Cécille and Thierry (bass) left the band.

The original Sunset mini-LP was released with just 7 songs. This today’s version is the CD version, with 5 more songs and was released in ’90. There’s no much to talk about this album (lie, there is). In this album, the band was in the beginning of the movement mentioned above, where the darkwave/coldwave was still very present in the compositions. The album have a very delightful sound to hear, starting by the first Mary Sleeps Alone with that lullaby Music Box effect and lyrics about the mysteries of why Mary (fictional character of the band that appears in some band songs) sleeps alone...

Dark Times really sounds me like dark times; where the no reason of killing someone turns in a paranoia. The beat of the song help a lot with the lyric, a very humdrum beat.

The Night e The Promised Land are songs with dancing beats, with more vivid guitars making the sound stronger.

The Great Desire is a slow song but not less interesting than previous. With a good drum programming and the guitars again giving life to music.

Tearsdrops Again. It’s possibly the great song of album for me. Try to listen to it and don’t let get involved. Try to listen this song and don’t feel, at least, that your thoughts fly away for a while... The melody is very well, the bass line is hypnotic and the guitars provide an extra dose of psychosis.

The sound of The Nightmare shows well the song title and lyric (rather macabre). Mary In The Sky and On The Sea are great songs, were better produced, maybe. The Shelter is the song that for which I met the band. Progressive drum beat and a darkwave sound. Another Sunset is a different song of the others of this album, the lyrics and melody. More synthpop (?) than darkwave.

The Sound - Shock Of Daylight EP (1984)

Adrian Borland, mantinha um projeto de post-punk junto a Bob Lawrence e Adrian Janes, chamado The Outsiders. Após o lançamento do segundo album com a banda The Outsiders, em 1979, o grupo se dissolveu quando Bob e Adrian deixaram a banda. Assim, Borland deu vida ao The Sound. Ainda em '79, assinaram contrato com a gravadora Korova Records e, em 1980, lançaram o Jeopardy, gravado no Elephant Studio, Londres. Em 1980, Bi Marshall deixa a banda para a entrada de Max Mayers, e em '81 lançam o LP From The Lions Mouth.

O EP Shock Of Daylight, aqui postado, foi lançado em '84 e as músicas deste EP se seguiram marcantes nos shows do Sound. Este EP só peca pelo fato de ter apenas 6 músicas (bem que poderia ter sido um LP...), porém, são todas geniais, com boas letras e melodias viciantes. A New Way Of Life é, de fato, uma música perfeita. Aquele solo de guitarra aos 3:10 é simplesmente de outro mundo, é algo que vai fundo. Sem falar do baixo que é um dos mais marcantes do EP. Dream Then Plans foi a primeira paixão deste disco, principalmente depois que a escutei ao vivo no bootleg de Rotterdam que circula pela internet (e que algum dia também vai estar por aqui).

Certa vez, vi em algum lugar que o The Sound foi uma banda injustiçada dos anos 80, e concordo. Ela não teve a atenção merecida da mídia. Esse fato foi o que levou Adrian Borland a ter sintomas de alguma doença mental em meados de '85 (vai ver não aguentou ver seu genioso trabalho indo pro ralo...). Após a gravação do último LP (Thunder Up), quando em turnê pela Espanha, Borland teve alguns colapsos nervosos e a banda decidiu que era o fim. Borland prosseguiu ainda em carreira solo e como produtor de algumas bandas, porém, acabou caindo em uma depressão após o segundo disco da White Rose Transmission, resultando no seu suicídio em 26 de Abril de 1999, quando ele se atirou na frente de um trem na estação de Wimblendon.

The Shock Of Daylight EP was released in '84 and the songs were very outstanding in the concerts. The bad thing of this EP is it have just 6 songs (it might as well have been a LP...). Just great songs, with great lyrics and addictive melodies. A New Way Of Life is a perfect song, indeed. That guitar solo at 3:10 is from another world, it's just something that goes deep. Not to mention the bass which is great. Dream Then Plans was the first passion from this EP, mostly when I listen to this song live in the Rotterdam bootleg that you can find on the net (and some day you will be find here to).
Once, I read that The Sound was a wronged band at the 80s, and I agree. They don't have the deserved attention. This fact led Adrian Borland to some mental illness symptoms by '85 (maybe he could not stand the fact of seeing your work being lost). After the release of Thunder Up, when the band was in tour at Spain, Borland had some nervous breakdowns and the band decided it was the end. Borland keep in solo career and being productor of some bands, but he becamed depressed and this results in your suicide at April 26, 1999, when he jumped in front of a train in Wimblendon station.
