Killing Joke - Brighter Than A Thousand Suns (1986)

Bem, já faz muito tempo que venho querendo postar este disco que, em minha singela opinião, é uma obra de arte que abrange desde o post-punk ao coldwave. Um gothic rock de qualidade e não temo em dizer, o melhor álbum do Killing Joke. Nele, podemos ouvir teclados que por vezes nos remetem a um som etéreo (ou ethereal) como vistos em Wintergardens e A Southern Sky; guitarras simples porém harmoniosas, com distorções suaves e ao mesmo tempo angustiantes; um baixo meio “funkeado” como em Love Of The Masses, que foi a primeira música que me chamou a atenção justo pelo destaque do baixo no início. Depois foi a vez de Chessboards e então de Wintergardens. A bateria se destaca pelas equalizações, variando de música a música, com uma pegada inconfundível do post-punk dos primeiros álbuns. Devo destacar ainda a voz de Jaz Coleman? Em Rubicon você quase consegue vê-lo em ação no palco através de todo o êxtase que a música lhe proporciona. O mesmo vale para Twilight Of The Mortal e Chessboards, que abriam a maior parte dos shows da turnês deste disco. Quem já o viu em ação nos palcos, é quase que impossível não associar as primeiras notas destas músicas com aquela mistura de feições de raiva, euforia e sorrisos psicopatas ao passo em que pula e chama o público para participar daquela mistura de emoções que se eram vistas no palco. Este disco teve versões em cassete e CD com 3 canções bônus mas é a versão do LP que vos trago hoje. Enjoy it!

>>> Well, it’s been a long time that I’ve want to post this album which in my simple opinion, it’s a work of art that reachs from post-punk to coldwave. A quality gothic rock and I have no fear in say this: the best album of Killing Joke. In this album, we can hear keyboards that sometimes remind us of an ethereal sound as we can hear in Wintergardens and  A Southern Sky, simple but harmonic guitars, with soft and distressing distortions at the same time; a funk line bass like in Love Of The Masses, which was the first song that called me attention with the bass line at the beggining of the song. Then it was the turn of Chessboards and Wintergardens. The drum equalization is really something that attracts me along with the unmistakable post-punk beat from their early albums. Should I point out Jaz Coleman’s voice? At Rubicon you almost see him at the stage in action through all the ecstasy that song gifts you. The same for Twilight Of The Mortal and Chessboards, which opened most of the shows from this disc tour. Who already saw him at the stage in action, it’s almost impossible not to associate the first notes of this song with the blend of anger/rage, euphory and psychopatic smiles features while he jumps and calls the audience to take part in that mix of emotions that was saw at the stage. This disc have cass and CD versions with 3 bonus songs but it’s the LP version I bring you today. Enjoy it!

Cold Comfort - Issue De Secours EP (2014)

Descobri a Cold Comfort junto a Crystal Night já postada aqui. Este som de hoje vem da cidade de Rivne, na Ucrânia, e trata-se de um post-punk minimalista de extrema qualidade, com guitarras simples e angustiantes (aquelas distorções a la Joy Division) e um baixo, como costumo falar: seco. Marcante. Sem muitos efeitos. Apenas as notas sendo executadas com maestria na pegada post-punk. Falando em baixo marcante, devo destacar aqui a faixa título homônima deste segundo EP da banda, que representa bem as palavras ditas anteriormente. Here And Now e Bleached Bones são canções agitadas, que desperta a euforia e exaltação de não querer manter-se parado. To The Vacant Shores é de um clima mais darkwave onde podemos ver bem a descrição de guitarras simples e angustiantes.

A banda lançou ainda, anteriormente a este, um outro EP em cassete intitulado Modern Crypts em 2013, nem de longe menosprezado em relação a esse, com um som mais sujo que me remete ao deathrock de LA. Sem mais, apreciem mais este som.

>>> I discover the Cold Comfort together with Crystal Night already posted here. This sound comes from the town of Rivne, Ukraine, and it is a minimalist post punk of extreme quality, with simple and harrowing guitars (that Joy Division’s distortions) and a bass, as I usually say: dry. Outstanding. Without many effects. Just the notes being performed  with maestry and a post punk step. Talking about outstanding bass, I shall point out the homonymous title track of this second EP, which represents as well as previous words. Here And Now and Bleached Bones are agitated songs, that awakens the euphoria and exaltation of don’t keep calm. To The Vacation Shores is a darkwave song where we can see the description of simple and harrowing guitars.

The band released a cass EP titled Modern Crypts in 2013, that it’s not even understimated in relation to this, with a heavy sound that makes me remember the LA deathrock bands. No more words, enjoy this sound.

Sad Lovers & Giants - Feeding The Flame CD (1988)

Essa é uma das bandas que conheci aleatoriamente pela internet. Vagando de blog em blog, sempre via referências ou influências sonoras da Sad Lovers & Giants nas postagens. Até que um dia, vi na barra de vídeos similares do YouTube a tal banda que eu via vez ou outra pelos becos obscuros da net e, assim, conheci Imagination e Things We Never Did. Lembro de ter pensado “porra, mas que guitarrinha massa” ou algo do tipo e que o solo do saxofone ficou gravado na mente por um tempo, e fui atrás do disco que tinha aquela música. Busquei então pela imagem de um “homem gritando” que me vinha a mente quando lembrava da banda (a capa do best of E-mail From Eternity) e então achei o Feeding The Flame.

Devo dizer que me impressionei, de fato, com a sonoridade da banda. Em especial com as guitarras, os harpejos destoantes que ecoam durante todas as canções (não quero aqui desmerecer os demais instrumentos mas a guitarra é algo que chama atenção :] ). Destaco aqui algumas canções como Cowboys, Big Tracks Little Tracks e Man of Straw (que está neste disco em sua versão do single 12’’) além da já citada Imagination; ambas com destaque para os riffs psicodélicos de guitarra. Algumas canções tem uma peculiaridade a mais com os teclados, como Vendetta, que possui um longo (e harmonioso) solo de teclas que faz sua mente viajar para lugares bem distantes. Close To The Sea é outra canção de melodia harmoniosa, que transmite uma calma a quem a ouve; a guitarra aqui mais uma vez se destaca de forma grandiosa... é uma das canções extras nesta versão do álbum mas que poderia facilmente está também na original de '83 (a sua primeira aparição foi no 12" de Man Of Straw). 3 Lines foi gravada ao vivo em ’83 (obrigado Discogs!) e segue a mesma linha das canções do LP original. No geral, o que mais me chamou atenção aqui é a maneira como a guitarra soa junto a esse “post-punk wave”. Sem mais, apreciem mais este som.

>>> This is one of the bands that I have met randomly in the internet. Wandering from blog to blog, I always saw some posts about the sound references and influences of other bands based in Sad Lovers & Giants. So one day, I saw in the YouTube similar videos the band that I saw sometime in the obscure alleys from the internet and so, I met Imagination and Things We Never Did. I remember thinking “omg, what na amazing guitar” or something and the sax solo that stayed in my mind for a while, and I’ll search for the Imagination’s album. I searched for an image of a “man screaming” that came’s to my mind when I think about the band (the front of the best of E-mail From Eternity) and I found the Feeding The Flame.
I shoud tell you that I was really impressed with the band’s sound. The guitars in particular, the great arpeggios that echo throughout the songs (I don’t want to belittle the other instruments but the guitar is something that really hold you attention :] ). I point out here Cowboys, Big Tracks Little Tracks and Man of Straw (include in this album in the 12” single version) in addition to the aforementioned Imagination; both with featuring the guitar riffs. Some songs have a peculiarity with the keyboards, like Vendetta that have a long (and harmonious) keyboard solo that drives your mind to far places. Close To The Sea is one of the extra songs of this album (but could perfectly fits to the original 83's version) taken from the 12" Man Of Straw, harmonious and definitely a song that provides a calm to who's listen to; point out to the guitars 3 Lines was recorded live in ’83 (thanks to Discogs!) and takes the same sound of the original LP­. What call me so much attention was the way that the guitar sound in this “post-punk wave”. Just enjoy this sound.
