Eu não lembro ao certo como me deparei com eles, mas faz uns 8 ou 10 anos que os becos escuros da internet me fizeram esbarrar no The Comsat Angels. Devo ter visto algo em algum blog e lembro de ter ido procurar a música no YouTube, não me recordo qual música foi mas sei que foi alguma do disco da postagem de hoje, o Land de ‘83. Achei bacana o som, e baixei o disco para ouvir depois. E esse depois perdurou por muito tempo até que lá por 2016, eu conheci a rádio Underground 80s, da Soma FM. Ouvia bastante (e ainda ouço) e sempre ouvia umas músicas do Land sem nem saber que era o The Comsat Angels. Num belo dia, ao ouvir determinada música (acho que era Island Heart), fui ver quem era o artista daquela música que eu já havia ouvido várias vezes e os reconheci na banda que havia escutado uma música tempos atrás.
Este disco foi quando eles entraram na sonoridade mais comercial da época e, ao menos para mim, não decepcionaram. Fiquei impressionado como este disco não consegue ocupar o cargo de um dos melhores para alguns fãs pela internet. Mas claro, os discos anteriores a eles mostravam um Comsat Angels diferente, com uma veia pós punk que os impulsionou nos primeiros momentos de vida, ainda com a primeira gravadora (a clássica Polydor), e isto definitivamente fez com que os fãs se prendessem aos primeiros discos. Em Land, a Jive apostou em uma sonoridade mais popular para a época. Os singles para este disco foram muito bem recebidos. Uma nova versão para Independence Day, esta que ganhou um clipe (que você pode encontrar aqui, com uma qualidade não tão boa mas dá pra pegar o feeling da coisa). Will You Stay Tonight? que também foi single deste disco, é a música que abre o disco, diga-se de passagem, foi uma boa escolha. A gente já percebe a pegada new wave que está presente neste disco. Island Heart é uma das melhores (se não for a melhor!), com uma batida que lhe convida a não ficar parado; está nos meus sets de discotecagem.
De Will You Stay Tonight? a As Above, So Below (destaque para a linha de baixo dessa aqui!), só tem pancadas; não há uma música ruim. Talvez Alicia (Can You Hear Me) possa ser a mais fraquinha das canções mas não menos digna. Eu custei a me afeiçoar a I Know That Feeling, mas hoje consigo apreciá-la, em toda sua beleza retraída mas não menos atraente. Ela é outra que possui uma linha de baixo interessante. Mister Memory é outra ótima canção que eu sempre ouvia na Underground 80s.
Este disco está justamente nesta transição da fase pós punk deles para a mais new wave, ou mais comercial. E acredito que é justamente por isso que gostei tanto dele. Eles estavam buscando uma nova linha sonora mas sem querer deixar as raízes para trás, isso fez eles produzirem músicas que estão entre essas duas linhagens: um pé no pós punk, outro no new wave.
O The Comsat Angels é mais uma das bandas perdidas dos 80s. Assim como o The Chameleons, eles também foram citados como influência das bandas “revival” do pós punk, como o Editors e o Interpol.
A maioria dos fãs da banda, como já falei, não tem este disco como um dos melhores, mas sim o debut deles de ‘80 (Waiting For A Miracle) ou o seu segundo disco de ‘81, o Sleep No More. Para mim é o melhor… Talvez ele possa disputar esse lugar com o Sleep No More mas isso é assunto para outra postagem…
I don't remember for sure how I met them, but it's been about 8 or 10 years since I heard The Comsat Angels for the first time. Maybe I saw something in some blog and I remember looking for that song on YouTube. It doesn't come to my mind right now what the song was but I know for sure that it was a song from today's post, the 83's Land. I really liked the sound and downloaded the entire album to listen to later. But this "later" take too loooong and so, in 2016 I found the Soma FM Underground 80s radio. I listened a lot to this radio (and still listen!) and always heard songs from Land with no even knowing that the song was The Comsat Angels. So, one day I listened to that song (I think it was Island Heart), and started looking at what was the band behind that song I was listened so much and recognized them in the band that I heard a unique song years ago.
In this disc, they are in a more commercial sound from that era and, at least for me, they didn't disappoint. I was impressed how this disc can't hold the position of one of the best albums to The Comsat Angels fans on the internet. But of course, the previous releases show a different Comsat Angels, with a post punk vein that brought them up at the beginning of the career, still with the first record company (the classic Polydor), and I think this made the fans get roped to the first releases. In Land, the Jive bet on a most popular sound at that epoch. The singles from this album were very well received. A new version to Independence Day (and better, for me of course) with a video (you can find the video here, with a low quality but stills good). Will You Stay Tonight? was a single too, it's the open song, a good choice by the way. We can perceive the new wave present in the disc. Island Heart is one of the best songs (maybe the best!) with a beat that invites you to don't stay quiet.
From Will You Stay Tonight? to As Above, So Below (highlight to the bass line in this one!), there's only very great songs. There's no bad song. Maybe Alicia (Can You Hear Me) could be in the last position but no less worthy. It took a long time to get attached to I Know That Feeling, but today I can appreciate it in all its retiring but no less attractive beauty. This is another song with an interesting bass line. Mister Memory is another great song I always listened to on Underground 80s radio.
This disc is between this transition from post punk to new wave and I believe this is just the reason why I liked it so much. They were looking for a new sound, but without putting post-punk aside. This made them produced songs between these two styles and this was just great!
The Comsat Angels is another lost band from the 80s. I really really think that this guys should receive more attention (like songs in the song streaming platforms!). As The Chameleons, they were cited as the main influence to the revival post punk bands like Editors and Interpol.
As I said before, most of the band's fans don't consider this album one of the best, but the debut album of '80 (Waiting For A Miracle) and their second album of '81, the great Sleep No More. For me it's the best... Maybe this position can be threatened by Sleep No More but that's a subject for another post...
