Foreign Cinema - Non-Synchronous Sound EP (2009)

A Foreign Cinema é uma banda goianiense que habita agora a distante San Francisco nos EUA, nasceu da parceria entre Dave Han e Natalia Silva em 2008. Seu som carrega influências que passeiam entre o Cocteau Twins, The Cure (me remete ao Faith...), Depeche Mode e até mesmo o New Order; tudo isso mesclado com elementos do shoegaze e triphop. A banda iniciou com o Dave Han e Natalia Silva mas logo se juntou a eles Halleia Sadeghi nos teclados. Esta foi a formação do primeiro EP gravado por eles, o Non-Synchronous Sound que trago hoje. Atualmente a formação conta com Brandon Chaves no lugar de Halleia nos teclados e guitarras.

O som deles é facilmente absorvido por aqueles que gostam das bandas citadas acima. Fãs dos 80s e hipsters também são bem vindos. Ao mesmo tempo em que seu som mergulha no 'lado negro' das influências da década de 80, o shoegaze e o triphop trazem uma luz para tudo isso, balanceando o som. A faixa 3 é nada mais, nada menos que uma cover do Depeche Mode, o lado b do single Dreaming Of Me de '81, que eu arriscaria dizer ser melhor que a própria versão original. Recentemente, lançaram seu novo trabalho, o LP Monochromatic disponível para compra aqui, bem como os outros trabalhos. Sem mais, fiquem com mais esta joia desconhecida.

>>> Foreign Cinema is a band from Goiânia (Brazil) located in San Francisco, USA. It was born of the association of Dave Han and Natalia Silva in 2008. Their sound carries influences that passes through the Cocteau Twins, The Cure (make me wonder in Faith...), Depeche Mode and even New Order, all mixed with shoegaze and triphop elements. Their sound is easily absorbed by those who like the bands  previously mentioned. 80's fans and hipsters are welcome too. At the same time Foreign's sound sink in the 'dark side' of the 80's influences, the shoegaze and triphop bring a light to all of it, balancing the sound. The third track is nothing more than a Depeche Mode cover, the b-side of the '81 single Dreaming Of Me, that I would venture to say that's better than the original version. Recently, they released their new work, the LP Monochomatic available here, as well as other works. Enough talk. Take this rare, precious jewel of music and enjoy it.

Adrian Borland and The Citizens - Brittle Heaven (1992)

Há 14 anos atrás este grande cantor, compositor e produtor musical pôs fim a sua vida ao se atirar em frente a um metrô na estação de Wimbledon, Londres. Um gênio incompreendido da música, que não teve a merecida atenção das mídias da época, porém, ainda nos deixou ótimas canções tanto em sua carreira solo, como nos projetos anteriores (The Outsiders e The Sound).

Este álbum é cheio de ótimas músicas; músicas com ótimas melodias e letras (Universe Of You, a melhor letra deste álbum). Brittle Heaven, Flight 23 e Faithful (com aquela introdução nos teclados que fica na mente) estão entre as mais animadas do disco. Este álbum é uma verdadeira poesia que transmite muito bem os sentimentos  de cada música para o ouvinte. Apenas uma curiosidade, este álbum foi gravado com os músicos de uma banda holandesa chamada de Sjako! que tocavam com Borland desde o início de sua carreira solo. Talvez esta seja a explicação para um tão bom encontro entre as melodias de todo o álbum.
Esta postagem de hoje é em homenagem a este grande músico e o álbum é, para mim, o melhor de sua carreira solo: o Brittle Heaven.

>>> 14 years ago this great singer, songwritter and musical producer ended his life when threw yourself in front of a train in the Wimbledon Station, London. A misunderstood genius of music, that not had the deserve attention of the media of the time but still left to us great songs both in his solo career as well in your previous projects (The Outsiders and The Sound).
This album if full of great songs; songs with great melodys and lyrics (Universe Of You, the best of this album for me). Brittle Heaven, Flight 23 and Faithful (with the keyboard intro that sticks in your mind) are among the more animate songs. This album is a real poem that transmits very well the feelings of each song to the listener. Just a curiosity, this album was recorded with the musicians that played with Borland since the start of your solo career. Maybe this be the explanation to a so good encounter between the melodies of all the album.
This today's post is a homenage to this great musician and this album is for me the best: the Brittle Heaven.

Ed Motta & Conexão Japeri - Ed Motta & Conexão Japeri (1988)

Antes de tudo, quero dizer que o Seu Arsenal não é composto apenas de post punk, cold/darkwave, synthpop entre outros tantos gêneros aqui presentes, mas sim de boas bandas independente de seus estilos e influências e que penso dever compartilhá-las por aqui. :}
Esta é uma banda brasileira criada na segunda metade da década de 80 pelo sobrinho de Tim Maia, o cantor e compositor Ed Motta, juntamente com o guitarrista Luiz Fernando Comprido. A banda foi batizada primeiramente com o nome de Expresso Realengo porém foi logo mudada para Conexão Japeri.

Ed Motta tinha apenas 16 anos quando gravou este álbum com o Conexão Japeri que é repleto de influências do funk e soul music e também do pop. Músicas como "Manuel" e "Vamos Dançar" estouraram nas rádios. Mas o disco em si não deixa nenhuma música a desejar (meu mero ponto de vista). "Seis da Tarde" é uma ótima música com uma pegada do soul e uma bela letra. "Um Love" é outra boa música com baixo e teclas marcantes, que ficam no ouvido. "Baixo Rio" e "Parada de Lucas" também tiveram seus bons momentos nas rádios. Enfim, todas as músicas foram marcos para o soul music nacional por que o disco em si deu uma nova cara para o soul brasileiro. Enjoy it.

This is a brazilian band created at the second half of 80's by the nephew of Tim Maia, the singer and composer Ed Motta, together with the guitar player Luiz Fernando Comprido. The band was baptized first with the name of Expresso Realengo but was renamed soon to Conexão Japeri.

Ed Motta was only 16 when recorded this album with Conexão Japeri that was replete of funk/soul and pop influences. Songs like "Manuel" and "Vamos Dançar" made huge radio hit. But the album itself leaves any song to be desired (my mere point of view). "Seis da Tarde" is a great song with a soul vibe and a great lyric. "Um Love" is another great song with a striking bass and keys, that keep in the ears. "Baixo Rio" and "Parada de Lucas" also had your good moments on the radio. Anyway, all songs was a milestone in national soul music 'cause the album gives a new 'face' to the brazilian soul. Enjoy it.

Days Are Nights - About Boys And Flowers (2010)

A Days Are Nights é um projeto criado por Dennis 80's em 2006, quando ele deixou a banda Dancing In Tears. Com melodias fortes e um lirismo marcante, cantando em português como também no bom e velho inglês temas que abordam o modo de viver em sociedade, sobre os ressentimentos humanos que são aprisionados no eu interior e degradam sempre mais e mais, além do lado cristão do vocalista. As influências da banda vem diretamente dos anos 80 (a começar pelo nome do fundador e principal membro), das mais diversas como o post punk, o darkwave e o coldwave. Bandas como Asylum Party e The Cure, além das brasileiras Arte No Escuro, Ethiopia, Legião Urbana e Violeta de Outono. O nome da banda veio, segundo Dennis, devido "a degradação humana, da falta de amor, de fé e irmandade das pessoas", penso que a partir disso vem a ideia de que todos os dias são escuros, assim, todos os dias são noites.

Em Setembro de 2006 foi lançado o álbum de estréia da banda, o Sounds Of The End (com uma melodia profunda, um álbum 'dark'), pelo selo 80's Records do próprio vocalista e líder da banda. Este disco teve uma ótima repercussão no cenário underground nacional bem como no da Europa, através de sites, fanzines, etc. Em 2008 foi a vez do Eu Te Vejo Dormir Enquanto o Tempo Nos Mata, que foi lançado também com exclusividade para download. O álbum de hoje foi lançado em 2010 pela Amarelo Discos: o About Boys And Flowers. Para mim este é o melhor disco da DAN, onde talvez estejam ainda mais presentes os elementos fundamentais da banda, tanto em melodia como em termos líricos. "Distroyed Streets" mostra-nos um bom post punk. Em "Dias de Chuva" (a melhor deste álbum para mim) nota-se a presença das influências do dark e coldwave. Eu imagino que "Ao Meu Redor" fale sobre a irmandade e também o modo de viver em sociedade, onde as pessoas estão sempre esperando o momento certo para afundar um punhal nas costas do outro. Ainda há a belíssima "Sobre Meninos e Flores" com uma doce melodia em meio a palavras sobre a vida e a juventude. Enfim, esta é a Days Are Nights, uma banda que consegue traduzir em suas canções algumas coisas do cotidiano de muita gente por aí. >>> Days Are Nights is a project created by Dennis 80's in 2006, when he's left the band Dancing In Tears. With strong melodys and a striking lyricism, singing themes that approach the life style in a society, the  human resentments thas are imprisoned in the inner self and degrade more and more, as well as the christian side of the singer. The band influences comes directly from 80's (starting with the name of the founder and main member), from the post punk to darkwave and coldwave. Bands as Asylum Party and The Cure, also the brazilian bands Arte No Escuro, Ethiopia, Legião Urbana and Violeta de Outono. The band name comes, Dennis says, due "the human degradation, the lack of love, of faith and brotherhood of the people", I think, from that, comes the idea that every day is dark, all days are nights.
In September 2006 was released the debut album called Sounds Of The End (with a deep melody, a dark album), by label 80's Records of the vocalist and band leader. This album had a great repercussion in the underground national scene as well as from Europe, through sites, fanzines, etc. 2008 was the time of the album Eu Te Vejo Dormir Enquanto o Tempo Nos Mata, that was released with exclusivity in the internet to download. The today's album was released in 2010 by the label Amarelo Discos: About Boys And Flowers. For me this is the best album from DAN, where may be presents, the essential elements of band, both in melody as in lyrical therms. "Distroyed Streets" show to us a good post punk. In "Dias de Chuva" (the best of this album for me) note the presence of dark and coldwave influences. I imagine that "Ao Meu Redor" talk about the brotherhood and the life style in the society, where people are always waiting the right moment to sink a dagger in your back (understand this as something like treason). There's still the beautiful "Sobre Garotos e Flores" with a sweety melody with words about the life and youth. Anyway, this is the band that can translate some things of the everyday from people around the world, this is the Days Are Nights. Enjoy it.

Kommunity FK - Close One Sad Eye (1985)

Na época em que os focos musicais principais eram gêneros como o gótico, industrial (na época estava crescendo muito o uso de sintetizadores), etc., Patrick Mata buscou inspiração em algumas bandas e cantores da época juntamente com influências do movimento dada (ou dadaismo) e criou a Kommunity Fuck, que em pouco tempo foi renomeada para Kommunity FK. Assim foi surgindo um movimento mais underground denominado de deathrock, na cidade de Los Angeles (que mais tarde seria conhecida como o berço do deathrock). Outra das influências musicais vem do punk rock, horror e glam rock.

Lançaram o primeiro álbum com 5 anos de carreira e este que trago hoje é de '85, o Close One Sad Eye. Este álbum foi de grande impulso para a banda porém não os manteve em atividades por muito tempo mas ainda participaram de diversas coletâneas. Em 2010, após mais de 20 anos de lançamento do último álbum eles trouxeram um novo trabalho chamado La Santissima Muerte e continuaram a sequência de shows que estavam fazendo desde meados de 2006.

Este álbum contém ótimas músicas, como "Something Inside Me Has Died" que é um hino do deathrock. Ainda destaco aqui "Junkies", "Trollops" e a faixa que deu nome ao primeiro álbum "The Vision And The Voice". A última faixa é uma outra versão de "Something Inside Me Has Died".

>>> When the main musical focus were gothic, industrial (was growing so much use of synthesizers), etc., Patrick Mata searched for inspirations in some bands and singers of epoch and mix with your influences of dada moviment (or dadaism) and created the Kommunity Fuck, but soon renamed to Kommunity FK. So, an underground movement was emerging named deathrock, in LA (that later would be known as the deathrock city). Other musical influences come from punk rock, horror and glam rock.

Released the first album 5 years after start the career and this that I bring today was released in '85, the Close One Sad Eye. This album give a big boost to band, however, don't kept in activity for long time but still attended various compilations. In 2010, after more 20 years of the release of your last album, they bring to us a new work called La Santissima Muerte and continue the sequence of shows that were making.

This album contain great songs, like "Something Inside Me Has Died" that is a deathrock hymn. I can highlight "Junkies", "Trollops" and the track that named the first album "The Vision And The Voice". The last track is another version for "Something Inside Me Has Died".

Poésie Noire - Love Is Colder Than Death (1989)

Poésie Noire. Um dos maiores nomes em termos de música gótica e eletrônica que surgiu na Bélgica na década de 80. A banda iniciou na primeira metade da década de 80 e em '85 ganharam o Breekend Rock Festival, um festival de boa reputação que aconteceu em Bree, Bélgica. Esse festival abriu as portas e janelas para a banda, que no ano seguinte começou a abrir shows da Dead Can Dance e The Sisters Of Mercy, o que foi uma oportunidade de mostrar suas músicas para um público específico. Ao longo de pouco mais de 5 anos de existência, a Poésie Noire deixou 9 álbuns, 15 singles entre outros materiais. Apareceram (e aparecem) em diversas coletâneas de new wave ou EBM pelo mundo afora.

Em '92, devido a desavenças entre a Poésie Noire e sua gravadora, a banda mudou seu nome para TBX ("To Be eXcited") e assinaram com a EMI Belgium, onde lançaram Delirious. Porém, segundo a EMI o novo álbum não foi feito para o consumo em massa, o que acarretou na exclusão da TBX do catálogo da EMI, e por fim a separação da banda. Em 2006, eles anunciaram que estavam preparando um novo álbum e em 2010 saiu Sense Of Purpose.

Love Is Colder Than Death é (particularmente) o melhor álbum da Poésie Noire e está entre os melhores dos 80s, para mim claro. =] É notória a mudança entre este álbum e os anteriores, aqui há uma nova banda, explorando um novo som, um som que buscava atingir um público mais vasto. "Déjà Vu" é uma das canções que mostram bem isso, uma ótima canção aliás, meio pop sem abandonar as raízes da banda. Há músicas com melodias tristes/fúnebres e as letras animadas; há músicas com uma letra triste e uma melodia animada; e há "Aura Of Sadness" com uma das letras mais belas que já li (apesar de toda a tristesa da música), uma poesia triste acompanhada de uma melodia fúnebre. "Taste Of Candy" é uma linda canção também, calma e sutil com uma doce melodia. "Oblivion" vem para animar o lado A do álbum. "Icicle" é realmente uma música fria, onde a voz de Johan se encontra numa das melhores fases, profundamente mais mórbida. "The Lake" está entre as 3 melhores do Poésie Noire para mim. A versão deste álbum que posto hoje é a edição limitada estendida. Sem mais, espero que apreciem esta pérola dos anos 80. Enjoy it!

>>> Poésie Noire. One of the biggest names in terms of gothic and electronic music which originated in Belgian in the 80 decade. The band starts in the first half of the 80 decade and in '85 won Breekend Rock Festival, a festival with good reputation from Bree, Belgium. In '92 'cause disagreements between Poésie Noire and your label, the band changed the name to TBX (To Be eXcited) and signed with EMI Belgium, and released Delirious album. However, EMI said that the new album was not for mass consumption, ended in the exclusion of the TBX from EMI catalogue and end of the band. In 2006 they announced that was working in a new album and in 2010 released Sense Of Purpose.

Love Is Colder Than Death is (particularly) the best Poésie Noire album and is among the bests from 80s, for me of course. =] It's notorious the change among this album and the previous. Here there's a new band, exploring a new sound, a sound that sought reach a wider public. "Déjà Vu" is one of the songs that show the change, a great song, half pop with no abandoning roots of Poésie Noire. There's songs with sad melodies and fun rhytms; there's songs with sad lyrics and fun melodies; and there's "Aura Of Sadness" with one of the most beautiful lyrics I've ever read (despite all sadness of song), a sad verses accompanied of a mournful melody. "Taste Of Candy" is a beautiful song too, calm and subtle with a sweet melody. "Oblivion" comes to animate side A of the album. "Icicle" is really really a cold song, where the Jo's voice is in the best phase, deeply more morbid. "The Lake" is among the top 3 of Poésie Noire for me. This album version of today is the extended version. No more, I hope that you enjoy it this pearl from 80s.

Opposition - Empire Days (1985)

No ano de '79, dos subúrbios ao sul de Londres, a Opposition surgiu com um post-punk denso, de sonoridade peculiar, com letras dominadas por influências da Segunda Guerra Mundial. Em '80 lançaram o single This Year pela Ariola Hansa, e somente em '81 lançaram Breaking The Silence seu primeiro álbum, pela Disc' AZ, produzido por eles mesmo. Na França, foi que eles conseguiram um vasto público em seus shows. Em '85, eles pararam as atividades da banda. Em '88, Mark Long e Marcus Bell gravaram um álbum sob o nome SO e tiveram um single entre os mais votados da MTV. Em '90, se reuniram novamente e gravaram o Blue Alice Blue com as mesmas influências do primeiro LP e seguem até os dias de hoje.

O disco de hoje é o quarto álbum da banda, e traz uma banda diferente dos 3 álbuns anteriores, onde estão com uma sonoridade animada e ainda mais trabalhada. Eu diria que eles se adaptaram um pouco a sonoridade que reinava na época na Europa, sem abandonar as raízes do post-punk. Destaco todo o álbum, "Five Minutes" é a música que melhor apresenta a mudança no álbum; "First Suspect" ao lado de "Five Minutes" foram as de maior sucesso do álbum. "Susan Gets By On Love" é uma rápida canção acústica que abre para "If That Wasn't Love", talvez a melhor canção do álbum, com uma letra um tanto romântica e ótima melodia. Sem dúvida, este disco tem todos os elementos para ser um dos discos mais tocados dos 80s; aproveitem o Empire Days.

>>> In '79, from the southern suburbs of London, Opposition emerged with a dense post punk, a peculiar sonority, with lyrics dominated by influences of the 2nd World War. In '80 they released the single This Year by the record label Ariola, and only in '81 they recorded Breaking The Silence, your first LP by Disc' AZ, produced by themselves. In France they have reached a wide audience in their shows. Around the '85 they stopped the activities. Mark Long and Marcus Bell recorded a LP in '88 with the name SO and have obtained a single between the top-rate on MTV. In 1990 they met again and recorded a new album called Blue Alice Blue with the same influences of the first LP.

The today's album is the fourth from Opposition and brings a different band of the 3 previous albums, with a sound more lively and more worked songs. I would say that they have adapted to the sound that reigned in the epoch, while maintaining the post punk roots. I highlight the full album, "Five Minutes" is the song that describes better the change in the Opposition's sound; "First Suspect" and "Five Minutes" were the songs most successful of the album. "Susan Gets By On Love" is a fast acoustic song that open for "If That Wasn't Love", that maybe the best song from this album, with a lyric a little romantic and great melody. With no doubts, the most successful (imho) album from the Opposition, the Empire Days.
