Missing Persons - Spring Session M (1982)

O Missing Persons se formou entre o fim da década de '70 e início dos obscuros 80's, produzindo uma música New Wave que estava em ascensão na época. Todos os membros se conheceram através de alguma ligação com Frank Zappa; Dale e Terry Bozzio, que era baterista da banda de Zappa, conheceram-se trabalhando com Zappa e casaram-se em '79. Wallen Cuccurullo conheceu o casal quando contribuía para o álbum Joe's Garage de Zappa. Patrick O'Hearn já havia tocado em turnês na banda de Zappa e Chuck Wild, um músico experiente chamado pela banda. Assim, no ano de 1980, surgiu de Los Angeles o Missing Persons. Primeiramente a banda se chamava U.S. Drag mas logo mudaram o nome.

Gravaram um EP com 4 músicas ainda em '80 no estúdio de Zappa que obteve um grande sucesso na rádio local e esgotou as 7 mil cópias rapidamente. Depois de 2 anos trabalhando em mais músicas, em '82 relançaram o EP de '80 com outras 250 mil cópias e lançaram o álbum Spring Session M (acertou quem pensou em um anagrama com o nome da banda :D), que vos trago hoje. O Spring Session M foi de grande repercussão e levou a banda a tocar, ao lado de bandas de nome da época, no US Festival na Califórnia, em Maio de '83. Em '84 gravaram o álbum Rhyme & Reason que não obteve um grande sucesso e em '86 o Color In Your Life. Durante a turnê deste último, aconteceu conflitos entre Dale e Terry que no decorrer da turnê foram aumentando, originando o fim da turnê, do casamento e da banda.

Descobri esta banda ocasionalmente, olhando uma coleção de vinis de meu pai e lá estava o Spring Session M meio acabado porém, ainda com um ótimo som. "Noticeable One" abre o álbum com um som meio New Wave, meio pop rock. "Windows" foi a canção que mais gostei quando comecei a ouvir a banda, com uma letra que faz várias divagações sobre janelas (?); sim, janelas mesmo. "Destination Unknown" é uma boa música que foi promovida em clipe pela MTV na época e está entre as de mais sucesso junto a "Words" e "Walking In L.A.". O lado B é repleto de músicas onde os teclados e sintetizadores reinam, como "Tears" e "Bad Streets".

Dale Bozzio deu à Missing Persons uma ótima contribuição com sua presença de palco e um estilo bem diferente (pra época) de se vestir e veio a se tornar um ícone New Wave da época.

Esta versão que estou postando é a versão em CD, que tem um adicional nas últimas faixas: "Mental Hopscotch" e um cover bem New Wave da canção "Hello, I Love You" do The Doors. Enjoy it!

>>> Missing Persons was formed between the end of 70's and early of the obscure 80s, producing New Wave songs that was on the rise at the time. All members met by some contact with Frank Zappa; Dale and Terry, drummer in the Zappa's Band, met up working with Zappa and married in '79. Wallen Cuccurullo met the couple when contributed to Joe's Garage albuns from Zappa. Patrick O'Hearn had played in some tours with Zappa and Chuck Wild, was an experienced musician hired by the band. So, in 1980 year, emerged at Los Angeles city the U.S. Drag but soon changed the name to Missing Persons.

Recorded an EP with 4 songs in 1980 in the Zappa's studio. This EP was a great sucess on the local radio and ended with 7000 copies quickly. After 2 years working in new songs, in '82 re-recorded 250.000 copies of the '80 EP and recorded the full-lenght album Spring Session M (success for who thought in an anagram with the band name :D), what's the today's album. The Spring Session M was of great repercussion and took the band to play with some known bands from epoch, in the US Festinal in California, in May from '83. In '84 recorded the Rhyme & Reason album that didn't get much success and, in '86, recorded Color In Your Life album. During the Color In Your Life tour, occurred some conflicts between Dale and Terry and the conflicts were increasing, resulting in the end of tour, end of the marriage of they and end of the band.

I discovered this band occasionally, when I took a look at my father's vinyl collection and there was the Spring Session M half spoiled but, still with a great sound. "Noticeable Ones" open the album with a sound half New Wave, half pop rock. "Windows" was a song that I liked so much when I started listen to this band, with the lyrics talking about windows (?); yeah, windows. "Destination Unknown" is a great song that was promoted by MTV at the epoch. It's among the most successful songs with "Words" and "Walking In L.A.". The B side is full of songs where the keyboards and synthesizers reign, like "Tears" and "Bad Streets".

Dale Bozzio gave to the Missing Persons a great contribuition with your stage presence and a different and peculiar style (in the epoch) of dressing-up and became an New Wave icon from the epoch.

Tokyo - Humanos (1985)

Banda de São Paulo, criada em '84 com um estilo meio new wave, meio pop rock, com suas influências também do punk rock, tachada por alguns como techno-punk (ou synthpunk). A banda revelou o cantor Supla e o produtor de MPB Eduardo Bidlovski, vulgo Bidi, por ter surgido no meio do movimento do Rock Nacional, junto à grandes bandas e ter feito um bom sucesso com as músicas "Humanos" e "Garota de Berlim", esta última com a participação especial de Nina Hagen.

Em '85, lançaram o single "Mão Direita" que teve sua execução proibida nas rádios pelo fato da letra falar sobre masturbação. Ainda em '85 lançaram "Humanos" e "Garota de Berlim"; e já pegando o embalo do lançamento dos singles, lançaram um LP no mesmo ano intitulado "Humanos", que vos trago hoje. O álbum inicia com "Eu Sou Triste", canção falando sobre um eu de tristeza, isolado, quase em depressão (lol). "Intenções" é uma das grandes do disco, junto a "Roupa X" (que contém um arpeggiator viajante que se prolonga por boa parte da música). Ainda há "Romântica" com a participação especial de Cauby Peixoto fazendo dueto com Supla nos vocais e, a belíssima "Estações". O teclado é, definitivamente, um instrumento bem presente no som da Tokyo, dando uma grande contribuição em todas as faixas deste álbum. Ainda lançaram um segundo álbum em '87 com um estilo diferente do Humanos, que não teve o sucesso do anterior, ocasionando no fim da banda.

>>> Created in '84, this band from the city of São Paulo (Brazil) with influences of new wave, pop rock and punk rock too, some people say they are techno-punk (ou synthpunk). The band brings the singer Supla and the MPB producer Eduardo Bidlovski, aka Bidi, 'cause emerged in the heart of the national 80s rock movement, together with other bands and have made a good success with the songs "Humanos" (Humans) and "Garota de Berlim" (Girl From Berlin), this last song with the special participation of Nina Hagen.

In '85, released the single "Mão Direita" (Right Hand), with the execution prohibited in radios 'cause talk about masturbation. Still in '85 release "Humanos" and "Garota de Berlim"; and with the momentum of the single releases, they release a LP in same year called "Humanos", that I'm bring you today. The album starts with "Eu Sou Triste" (I'm Sad), talking about a sad person, isolated, almost depressed (lol). "Intenções" (Intentions) with "Roupa X" (Clothes X) are the greats from disc. Still there "Romântica" (Romantic) with special guest Cauby Peixoto making a duet with Supla, and the beautiful "Estações" (Seasons). The keyboard is definitely an instrument very present in the Tokyo's sound, giving a big contribution in all tracks. They released a second album in '87 with a different sound from the first, that's had no great success ended in the end of band.

Moev - Dusk And Desire (1986)

Uma banda que viaja na submersidade do darkwave e nas notas e batidas eletrônicas mais animadas do synthpop. Essa é a Moev, banda canadense da cidade de Vancouver, fundada em '81 por Cal Stephenson e Tom Ferris. Juntaram-se a eles a vocalista Madeleine Morris e o guitarrista Mark Jowett. Assim, começaram lançando alguns singles pela Go! Records em '82 e logo chegaram ao LP "Zimmerkampf". Porém, pela insatisfação com o suporte dado pela Go!, o guitarrista Jowett e o gerente da banda Terry McBride fundaram a gravadora Nettwerk em '84 para que o material fosse suficientemente liberado. Madeleine deixou os vocais e Christine Jones assumiu para gravar em '84 os singles "Toulyev" e "Alibis". 

Estes singles seriam uma prévia para o próximo álbum da banda. Em '85, Christine saiu e Michela Arrichiello assumiu os vocais (doces vocais) junto com Cal. "Took Out The Lace" foi gravada e assim, lançaram o álbum que lhes trago hoje: Dusk And Desire, um dos melhores para mim. Foi lançado em '85 nos EUA e somente em '86 no Canadá com um line-up beeem extenso.

Como já falei sobre a "viajem" do Moev entre os estilos dos 80's, poupo comentários sobre este álbum, que é simplesmente brilhante. Um synthpop bem trabalhado, com músicas que ficam na mente, principalmente por causa dos teclados alucinógenos. "Photos" é de clima denso, para se dançar com a sombra projetada na parede. Quando escutarem "Kim Says" saberão o por que de teclados alucinógenos. "Alibis" inaugura o lado B e está entre as mais animadas e dançantes do álbum. "Ophelia" mostra os doces vocais de Michela que destaco mais uma vez junto a todas as músicas do álbum. :)

>>> A band that travels between the most deep of the darkwave and more vivid the notes and electronic beats of the synthpop. This is Moev, canadian band from Vancouver, founded in '81 by Cal Stephenson and Tom Ferris. Joined them Madeleine Morrise and the guitar man Mark Jowett. So, they started released some singles by Go! Records in '82 and soon released the LP "Zimmerkampf". However, 'cause the dissatisfaction with the support by the Go!, Jowett and the manager of band Terry McBride founded the record label Nettwerk in '84 for the material was sufficiently released. Madeleine has lef the vocals and Christine Jones assumed to record the singles "Toulyev" and "Alibis" in '84.
This singles would be a preview to the next album. In '85, Christine has left and Michela Arrichiello took over the vocals (sweet vocals) along with Cal. "Took Out The Lace" was recorded and soon, they released the today's album: Dusk And Desire, one of the best for me. Was released in '85 in USA and only in '86 in Canada with a extensive line-up.
As I talked about the "travel' of Moev in the 80s, I save you the comments about this album, that is simply brilliant. A well worked synthpop, with songs that stay in your mind, thanks to the hallucinogens keyboads. "Photos" is a dense weather song, to dance with your shadow on the wall. When you hear "Kim Says" you will get the answers about hallucinogens keyboads. "Alibis" starts the B side and is between the more liveliest and dancing songs from this album. "Ophelia" show the sweet vocals of Michela that I point out again along with all the songs from album. :)

Hanoi-Hanoi - Hanoi-Hanoi (1986)

O Hanoi-Hanoi foi uma banda carioca formada em '85 pela parceria de Arnaldo Brandão e do poeta Tavinho Paes, que participava da composição das letras junto com Arnaldo. A eles se juntaram Afonso, Pena e Cássio (guitarras, bateria e percussão, respectivamente) e daí gravaram o primeiro LP homônimo em '86. "Totalmente Demais" e "Blá, Blá, Blá... Eu Te Amo (Rádio Blá)" (esta última, parceria com Lobão) foram hits do primeiro álbum na época. No segundo álbum "Fanzine" de '88 foi lançada uma música em parceria com Cazuza, "O Tempo Não Para", que se popularizou mais na versão do mesmo. Ainda lançaram mais 4 álbuns até a metade dos anos 90 e em seguida encerraram os trabalhos. Arnaldo Brandão segue até hoje em sua carreira solo. Não chegaram a atingir tanto sucesso nos 80's, apesar da boa qualidade das músicas. Isso só começou a acontecer no início da década de '90 com sua apresentação no Rock In Rio II, substituindo Barão Vermelho; porém, com a mídia dando espaço para outros gêneros musicais da época, o rock foi perdendo seu espaço e com isso diversas bandas foram saindo de cena. 

Sobre o disco de hoje, considero um dos melhores do arsenal nacional dos 80's. Da primeira até a última música, são todas dignas de um biz. :) O estilo musical neste álbum é uma mesclagem entre o rock, o pop e elementos derivados do jazz (a linhagem de baixo) e reggae. >>> Hanoi-Hanoi was a band from Rio and was born in '85 through the association between Arnaldo Brandão and the poet Tavinho Paes, that takes participation in the composition of lyrics with Arnaldo. Soon, joined Afonso, Pena and Cássio (guitars, drums and percussion, respectively) so they recorded the first self-titled LP in '86. "Totalmente Demais" and "Blá, Blá, Blá.. Eu Te Amo (Rádio Blá)" (this last, in association with Lobão) was hits from their first album. In the second album "Fanzine" was released a song in association with Cazuza, "O Tempo Não Para". They released more 4 albuns until the first half of 90s and closed the works. The success comes in middle of 90s in your performance at the Rock In Rio II, replacing Barão Vermelho; but the media gives attention at other styles and the rock was losing ground on the radio and with this, so much bands was out from the rock scene. About this album, I consider one of the bests from brazilian 80s arsenal. Heróis da Resistência - Religio (1988)

A Heróis da Resistência nasceu em '86 quando Leoni deixou o Kid Abelha, onde ele era baixista e o principal compositor, visando continuar sua carreira na música.

O Religio é mais uma pérola nacional. Um ótimo álbum mas nem tanto conhecido. O segundo álbum de estúdio da Heróis da Resistência, lançado no ano de '88, trouxe um Heróis diferente do primeiro álbum de '86. Não abandonaram totalmente o rock do primeiro disco mas, neste álbum, eles usaram elementos mais pop nas músicas, muitas tiveram a bateria original substituída pela eletrônica, dando um ar de synthpop (Contato, Hunt To Feed You, Narciso...) que já era muito comum na época, além de algumas composições estarem em inglês. Tank é uma música instrumental e agressiva. As músicas deste disco não tiveram um enorme sucesso como algumas do primeiro, mas nem por isso deixam a desejar. Contato e Silêncio foram bem executadas nas rádios da época. Foi gravado no estúdio Ocean Way e Take One e mixado no Studio 55, todos em Los Angeles, e produzido por Liminha, que produziu diversas bandas nacionais nos 80's.

Religio is a jewel from brazilian 80s sound. A great album but with no deserved respect. Is the second studio album from Heróis da Resistência, released in '88, brought a different band of the first '86 album. They don't abandoned the rock but introduced pop elements in their songs; some songs have a drum machine instead the acoustic drum, which gave a synthpop touch in songs like Contato, Hunt To Feed You and Narciso, and some songs are in english. Tank is an instrumental and agressive song. The songs of this album had no great success as the songs from first album but it's not a bad point. Contato e Silêncio had a great performance in the radios. This album was recorded in Ocean Wav  and Take One studio and mixed in Studio 33, in Los Angeles, and produced by Liminha (which produced several brazilian bands at the 80s).

Finis Africæ - Finis Africæ LP (1987)

Finis Africæ nasceu em Brasília na primeira metade dos anos 80 como um trio. Logo depois, Rodrigo se juntou ao trio para os vocais e logo participaram da coletânea Rumores com as canções Ética e Van Gogh. Em '85, Rodrigo saiu e Eduardo de Moraes (ex-Virgens) juntou-se a banda como vocalista e um letrista de mão cheia. Em '86 lançaram o mini-LP com seis faixas, das quais Armadilha e Máquinas do Prazer foram notoriamente reconhecidas. Eles tinham um som que se diferenciava das demais bandas de Brasília na época, juntando o dito dark da época com as percurssões da música africana (Deus Ateu) e uma pegada meio funk (sim, o funk na época era bom...), com letras inteligentes e um tanto românticas. O nome da banda veio do livro de Umberto Eco, O Nome da Rosa, que era o nome dado à biblioteca da abadia onde se desenvolvia a história. Acho importante dizer que, para mim, o Finis é dono do melhor baixo nacional dos 80s.

Em '87 lançaram um único LP homônimo que trazia 3 faixas do mini-LP em outras versões e mais 7 inéditas. O LP mostrava ainda mais a qualidade das músicas do Finis e rendeu diversos shows pelo Brasil afora e apresentações em programas de TV da época. E é o disco que trago hoje.

>>> Finis Africæ was formed in Brasília at the first half of 80s as a trio. Soon, Rodrigo has joined and assumed the vocals to participate of the compilation Rumores with the songs Ética and Van Gogh. The name of the band was derived of the Umberto Eco book called Il Nome Della Rosa, the name of the library of the history. I think important to say that the Finis Africæ had the greatest bass from the brazilian 80s music.
In '87 was released a homonymous LP bring to us 3 tracks of the first mini-LP and seven another tracks. The LP showed the quality of Finis Africæ sound and they play several shows in the Brazil cities and TV shows. Enjoy this sound.

Sound Devise - Demo Tape (1991)

Depois de meses sem nenhuma postagem, trago mais um som, uma banda da Grécia. Quarteto da cidade de Atenas com claras influências dos 80s e produziam um som Synthpop/Electro-pop. Não chegaram a gravar álbuns mais deixaram apenas duas demo tape's. Uma delas é a que trago hoje de '91, peculiar por trazer uma cover da melhor banda de todos os tempos (lol): The Cure; cover este que esteve presente na coletânea Ramdom Relations Part 2.  Também participaram do primeiro volume desta coletânea, o Ramdon Relations Part 1 com a faixa It's Not True. Apesar da qualidade do áudio ser um pouco baixa, dá para escutar o som normalmente. Sem mais, outra (ótima) banda achada pelos becos escuros da internet.

>>> After a few months without any posts, I bring you a greek band. A quartet from Athens with clear influences from 80s and they produced a Synthpop/Electro-pop sound. They don't recorded any LP but two demo tapes. This today's post is one of them, released in '91, unusual for have a cover of the best band of all time (lol): The Cure; this cover was present in the greek compilation Ramdom Relations Part 2. The band appeared in the Ramdom Relations Part 1 too with It's Not True. The audio quality it's not so cool but you can hear all the songs with no problems. No more, another great band found on the dark alleys of the net. Enjoy!
