Adrian Borland And The Citizens - Alexandria (1989)

Eu ainda fico em dúvida se este disco ainda é melhor que o segundo sob o nome dos The Citizens. Há canções simplesmente perfeitas neste disco, algumas melodias simples mas de uma audição incrível; é o caso de Rogue Beauty. Dedilhados simples nas guitarras, nada tão complexo no baixo ou na bateria mas ainda assim uma música magnífica. Community Call é uma canção mais “agitada” (particularmente, uma canção que gosto muito talvez pelo sax que acompanha toda a música) e mais dançante junto a Crystalline. No Ethereal. Esta é sem dúvida uma das melhores do disco. Havia ouvido ela primeiramente num bootleg que circula pela net (e que algum dia estará por aqui) e nele eu já havia percebido a grandiosidade desta canção, talvez mais bela em sua versão de estúdio do que ao vivo. Mais uma vez, melodia simples que soa perfeitamente com a voz do Adrian e uma bela letra. A acústica Other Side Of The World não deixa a desejar em relação as demais do álbum. Shadow Of Your Grace é o tipo de música que me faz lamentar-se por este artista ter partido tão cedo, onde vejo o quanto a música perdeu em 1999. Reparem na serenidade desta música, desde a batida do violão às simples notas na guitarra. Esta é uma das canções onde podemos notar a maestria de Adrian Borland como compositor. Este disco é o primeiro de sua carreira solo, uma vertente musical totalmente diferente da que ele seguia com o The Sound mas não menos apreciável. E é este conjunto de melodias e arranjos simples regados com ricas letras que vos transmito hoje.

>>> I’m still in doubt about how the best album under The Citizens name. There’s songs just perfects in this album, some simple melodies with an amazing hearing; as Rogue Beauty. Simple fingerings in the guitars, nothing so complex in the bass and drums but still is a magnificent song. Community Call is a more “agitated” song (particularlly, a song that I like so much maybe because the sax that play all the song) and more dancing like Crystalline. No Ethereal.  This is undoubtedly one of the best songs of this album. I’ve heard it in a bootleg that circulating the internet (some day will be here too) and I realized the grandiosity of this song, in this album maybe better than the live version. One more time, a simple melody that sounds perfectly with the Adrian’s voice and with a beautiful lyric. The acoustic Other Side Of The World leaves nothing to desire like the other songs of the album. Shadow Of Your Grace is the kind of song that makes me lament for this artist have died so young, here I see how the music lost in 1999. Note the serenity of this song, from the acoustic guitar to the simple guitar fingerings. This is a song where we can see the maestry of Adrian Borland as songwritter. This album is the first of his solo carreer, a different musical side of The Sound but not less aprreciable. And this group of simple melodies and arrangements drizzled with rich letters I delivered to you today. R.I.P. Adrian Borland.

Adrian Borland and The Citizens - Brittle Heaven (1992)

Há 14 anos atrás este grande cantor, compositor e produtor musical pôs fim a sua vida ao se atirar em frente a um metrô na estação de Wimbledon, Londres. Um gênio incompreendido da música, que não teve a merecida atenção das mídias da época, porém, ainda nos deixou ótimas canções tanto em sua carreira solo, como nos projetos anteriores (The Outsiders e The Sound).

Este álbum é cheio de ótimas músicas; músicas com ótimas melodias e letras (Universe Of You, a melhor letra deste álbum). Brittle Heaven, Flight 23 e Faithful (com aquela introdução nos teclados que fica na mente) estão entre as mais animadas do disco. Este álbum é uma verdadeira poesia que transmite muito bem os sentimentos  de cada música para o ouvinte. Apenas uma curiosidade, este álbum foi gravado com os músicos de uma banda holandesa chamada de Sjako! que tocavam com Borland desde o início de sua carreira solo. Talvez esta seja a explicação para um tão bom encontro entre as melodias de todo o álbum.
Esta postagem de hoje é em homenagem a este grande músico e o álbum é, para mim, o melhor de sua carreira solo: o Brittle Heaven.

A misunderstood genius of music, that not had the deserve attention of the media of the time but still left to us great songs both in his solo career as well in your previous projects (The Outsiders and The Sound).
This album if full of great songs; songs with great melodys and lyrics (Universe Of You, the best of this album for me). Brittle Heaven, Flight 23 and Faithful (with the keyboard intro that sticks in your mind) are among the more animate songs. This album is a real poem that transmits very well the feelings of each song to the listener. Just a curiosity, this album was recorded with the musicians that played with Borland since the start of your solo career. Maybe this be the explanation to a so good encounter between the melodies of all the album.
This today's post is a homenage to this great musician and this album is for me the best: the Brittle Heaven.

The Sound - Shock Of Daylight EP (1984)

Adrian Borland, mantinha um projeto de post-punk junto a Bob Lawrence e Adrian Janes, chamado The Outsiders. Após o lançamento do segundo album com a banda The Outsiders, em 1979, o grupo se dissolveu quando Bob e Adrian deixaram a banda. Assim, Borland deu vida ao The Sound. Ainda em '79, assinaram contrato com a gravadora Korova Records e, em 1980, lançaram o Jeopardy, gravado no Elephant Studio, Londres. Em 1980, Bi Marshall deixa a banda para a entrada de Max Mayers, e em '81 lançam o LP From The Lions Mouth.

O EP Shock Of Daylight, aqui postado, foi lançado em '84 e as músicas deste EP se seguiram marcantes nos shows do Sound. Este EP só peca pelo fato de ter apenas 6 músicas (bem que poderia ter sido um LP...), porém, são todas geniais, com boas letras e melodias viciantes. A New Way Of Life é, de fato, uma música perfeita. Aquele solo de guitarra aos 3:10 é simplesmente de outro mundo, é algo que vai fundo. Sem falar do baixo que é um dos mais marcantes do EP. Dream Then Plans foi a primeira paixão deste disco, principalmente depois que a escutei ao vivo no bootleg de Rotterdam que circula pela internet (e que algum dia também vai estar por aqui).

Certa vez, vi em algum lugar que o The Sound foi uma banda injustiçada dos anos 80, e concordo. Ela não teve a atenção merecida da mídia. Esse fato foi o que levou Adrian Borland a ter sintomas de alguma doença mental em meados de '85 (vai ver não aguentou ver seu genioso trabalho indo pro ralo...). Após a gravação do último LP (Thunder Up), quando em turnê pela Espanha, Borland teve alguns colapsos nervosos e a banda decidiu que era o fim. Borland prosseguiu ainda em carreira solo e como produtor de algumas bandas, porém, acabou caindo em uma depressão após o segundo disco da White Rose Transmission, resultando no seu suicídio em 26 de Abril de 1999, quando ele se atirou na frente de um trem na estação de Wimblendon.

>>> Adrian Borland, keeping a post-punk project with Bob Lawrence and Adrian Janes, called The Outsiders. After the release of the second album, the band broke up when Adrian and Bob left the band. So, Borland gave life to The Sound. In '79, they signed with Korova Records and in '80 released Jeopardy, recorded at Elephant Studio, London. 1980, Bi Marshal left the band and Max Mayers joined in the band and in '81 released From The Lions Mouth LP.
The Shock Of Daylight EP was released in '84 and the songs were very outstanding in the concerts. The bad thing of this EP is it have just 6 songs (it might as well have been a LP...). Just great songs, with great lyrics and addictive melodies. A New Way Of Life is a perfect song, indeed. That guitar solo at 3:10 is from another world, it's just something that goes deep. Dream Then Plans was the first passion from this EP, mostly when I listen to this song live in the Rotterdam bootleg that you can find on the net (and some day you will be find here to).
Once, I read that The Sound was a wronged band at the 80s, and I agree. They don't have the deserved attention. This fact led Adrian Borland to some mental illness symptoms by '85 (maybe he could not stand the fact of seeing your work being lost). After the release of Thunder Up, when the band was in tour at Spain, Borland had some nervous breakdowns and the band decided it was the end. Borland keep in solo career and being productor of some bands, but he becamed depressed and this results in your suicide at April 26, 1999, when he jumped in front of a train in Wimblendon station.
