The Chameleons - Script Of The Bridge (1983)

O país berço do pós punk.

Less Than Human é um ápice!

Lançaram três discos, o What Does Anything Mean? Enjoy it.

>>> I must have died a thousand times. This is just one of the phrases present on this great album, which, for me, is one of the most underrated post punk bands from the 80s. In the next posts more will come (some have already been posted here, here and here). The Chameleons emerged in Manchester, England. The cradle country of the post punk. But few people know what was, what is, and will be this album to post punk. Editors, Interpol, The National are just some bands that cite them as one of your main influences. These are the best known but surely there are so much around the world that have them as the base for your songs. I started to listen to The Chameleons when I was starting to live a hard time in my life and maybe because of this, this disc marks me a lot. Second Skin is a song that almost never I can listen to and sing without tears in my eyes. Less Than Human is an apex! But of course, this entire record is. One of the most deep lyrics in this album, along with a slow melody where the chorus and delay invade the full extension of your being and mixed up with the mournful beats of John Lever. This is one of the songs they had success in translating the lyrics in melody, or the melody in lyrics, I don't know... Maybe the most memorable feature of The Chameleons would be the perfect match between the guitars of Dave Fielding and Reg Smithies, that definitely make you trip without moving. Few people know how important these 4 guys were to post punk. They released three albums, What Does Anything Mean? Basically and Strange Times (from '85 & '86, respectively), and although both are great albums with great songs, no one of them call me more attention than today's post, released in '83, the Script Of The Bridge. I was reading Kim Gordon's autobiography (Girl in a Band: A Memoir) and she says "first records are successful today and always because you don't know what you're doing and still go there and do it". This calls me attention 'cause when I first listen to a band, I look for the first album. It was this way with The Chameleons but in this case, I disagree with Kim Gordon. I believe that this quartet knew exactly what they were doing, a simple and pure sound to reach the ears and the minds of those who would hear them, they just didn't know how big this work would be. Enjoy it.

Trees - Sleep Convention (1982)

Enjoy!

>>> This is a band I have been saving for a long time, at least 5 years. A sound that I even remember how I met (about 10 years ago) but probably was in the dark alleys from the internet. Not dark. Dark is not a word to describe this sound. Trees is a one-man-band, and this man is the composer Dane Conover. From San Diego - CA, emerged Sleep Convention as a classical new wave album, a quality new wave. This album had great reviews when came out but was a tragedy to the market. Tragedy that we can’t understand while we listen to Shock of The New or Delta Sleep… or even 11:00 AM, songs that definitely make me dance. By the way, this album have this special characteristic of the new wave, that’s a invite to the dance floor. Their songs have simple and engaging arrangements. Dane’s mind had something big and very special to offer the world by Trees. Recently in 2018, this album was re-released in CD by the Rubellan Remaster with 12 unreleased tracks, two alternative versions to Come Back and 11:00 AM and the others was a product of a supposed record that was never released.
In a fast looking on the internet, we can read some words unanimity: people telling that’s one of the best new wave records. This is, indeed, a underrated album in the 80s new wave history but I leave this opinion to you. Enjoy!

Latromodem - 11onze (2009)

>>> I had searching so much for informations about this band and never find anything... that's the reason why of this post.
Here is one of the most majestic sounds from the underground dark scenario that was made in the first decade of this century in Brazil. Back in the year of this release, I was young... I was just at 30ft deeply from the top of the musical iceberg that was the gothic universe for me. But listening to their sound in nowadays, I can imagine how the older ones had feeling about their sound when saw it live. I remember the 2009 edition of the Subterrâneo Gothic Rave (which was in fact the first ever gothic event that I had the pleasure of witnessing), Latromodem was one of more expected bands. I've heard some songs from this today's album, but had not been able to assimilate how grandiose this sound was. So the day has come, I remember I was laying down in one of the towers of the castle (place of event) and some people I don't knew just come inside the tower and tell that "the Latromodem' show is about to beggining". I was tottally drunk and tired. I remained lying down. And so I start to hear some sound and I remember thought "wow this is great". I thought someone was DJing and I giving no attention. After the second or third song I recalled the guys telling about the Latromodem show. I still regret not getting up and going to the stage to watch the show. I remember after the show, saw some people talking about it and in their faces was unanimous the look of surprise, like "I don't believe what I just saw". And now, listen to the 11onze, I can understand why people had that look. I'll not point out none of this songs because it's kinda impossible. This album is something totally smashing. It was something that people didn't expect and just hit them hard. Between the lyrics rich in lyricism and all the dark and dense melody, the audience could see the 80s gothic/post punk influence, and this influence was the main reason of the public had united at that event. I still could watch my first show of Plastique Noir and a memorable show of Les Enfants, but this is a topic for another day...
They release in 2010 an album called Elizabeth and after Robson left the band, was released the III.

Catalog Of Cool - Restless (1986) / In The Middle Of Nowhere 12" (1985)

Enjoy!

Catalog Of Cool:

Piet Van Den Heuvel (vocais, vocais de apoio e percussões)
Jan Verheyen (guitarras, teclados, vocais de apoio)

Bert Candries (baixo)
Walter Mets (bateria, percussões)
Taars Lootens (teclados)

Catalog Of Cool - Restless (1986)

01 - Lexicon Of Love
02 - The Life We Lead
03 - The Left Hand
04 - Jive Voodoo
05 - Astrid Lindberg
06 - In The Middle Of Nowhere
07 - Restless
08 - No Turnin' Back
09 - Miracles
10 - Souvenir From Africa
11 - Go From Zero

Catalog Of Cool - In The Middle Of Nowhere (1985)

A1 - In The Middle Of Nowhere
B1 - This Is Where The Heart Is

>>> Belgium, in the underground scene, is very well known for his EBM or industrial bands that was highlighted in the 80s (Front 242, Absolute Body Control, Poésie Noire, The Neon Judgment) and have gained world attention. However, the belgian lands offered a lot of good bands during the 80s; this band is proof of that. There were so many others that constituted the music scene called Belpop (Telex, The Scabs) that covered a lot of styles, from punk to synthpop.
Scooter was one of those bands that in the early 80s put You in the top charts of country, (they won the Summerhit Award in '81 promoted by the belgian Radio 2). The band had a short life but by its remaining success, Piet Van den Heuvel improves your musical career. For example, when Scooter ended, he started another one with your musical partner, the Scooter’s guitarist Jan Fraeyman, the today’s post: Catalog Of Cool.
Here is a band with very very little information on the internet. From Antwerp, with a rich sound variety and a great team of musicians to complete the picture, they gave life to Restless in ‘86, but unfortunately was your only work. In this album we can hear influences like soul, funk and jazz, mixed up with elements of the emerging new wave and pop. The Left Hand and Jive Voodoo have something on the drums that caught my attention when I heard it the first few times (reminded me of Boris Williams’ drum patterns). Astrid Lindberg is a wonderful instrumental with some arab melodies influences. In The Middle Of Nowhere was the first band single, that have a short and different version than the one that has already been released (which I put together in the archive with the B side This Is Where The Heart Is) and only came out in the CD version. This song should have been a classic from the 80s and deserved to have been played in all discotheques around the world. Both are great versions (I prefer the single version). Restless (a melody influenced directly by soul, funk and jazz) gave the album its name, but imho there’s better songs in this album. Souvenir From Africa had a collaboration with Noah Howard, an american jazz alto saxophonist. For those who like the 80s sounds and the musical styles above, here is a band that presents you a so-well sound mix of this styles. Enjoy and thanks to the 80zforever to provide us this work!

02 - Spina Bifida
03 - Renaissance Du Froid

>>> The Spina Bifida is a birth condition that affects the spine and the spine cord causing malformation; but in this today’s post this name bring us a very blunt and osbcure sound, a sound worthy from France. Statues D’Ébène deserved a way more than 3 tracks. Like most underground post punk, new wave and its variants, this band just release an EP in ‘86 and finish your works at ‘89. Two members came back in ‘93 with a EBM/industrial project called just Spina. According to the Phoenix Hairpins, they played some gigs and opening for bands as Jad Wio
The track that inspire the band’s name is a dark and anguish melody (the guitar notes define so well this term for me). The way the lyrics are uttered, a form just as ghostly, complete the song scenario. Is a song worthy of being background music in theatrical performances of the most varied themes, including the gothic. Renaissance Du Froid was the first obsession; a post punk sonority, with an outstanding bass line mixed with the guitars noises and distortions. Statues D’Ébène is the less obscure track but not by far an avoided song. The bad part of this EP is that it ends. Well, just enjoy this lost sound from the 80s.

Tanit - To Alaska... (1984)

Tanit.
Somente a pouco tempo atrás eu me deparei com o EP Can An Actor Bleed no Discogs e me lembrei dessa banda novamente.

Tanit:

Elsa Drezner (vocais)
Thierry Bertomeu (guitarras)
Pascal Humbert (baixo e violino)
Pascal Normal (bateria)

Tanit - To Alaska... (1984)

01 - Lola
02 - Echo Und Der Spiegel
03 - Banshee
04 - Wawel Song
05 - Questions, Questions
06 - Can An Actor Bleed?

>>> Tanit. Punic and Phoenician goddess, the main divinity of Carthage, alongside her consort Baal Hammon. The name, apparently, seems to have been taken from the Gustave Flaubert's book Salammbô, that is quoted in the back cover of their first EP, that bring us to the sound of this second release.
I never tire of being impressed by the french sounds. There's a fine line from the post punk to coldwave that connects all the French bands I've already heard and this line is in the today's disc. This is one of the bands I've met in the beginnings of the my walking though the dark alleys from the net (2009~2010 I guess). The song that call me attention was Banshee. I've saw it in a blog, the name call me attention 'causeofthis so I download the two discs avaliable in that blog. I must say that my first impression was not so good (the audio quality of the song archive in both discs was horrible and I don't like the minimalists beats so much) and unfortunately this fact deprive me to listening to this magnificent band over the years. Just some time ago I've saw the Can An Actor Bleed EP on Discogs and remind me of this band again. A guitar riff remained hidden in the shadows of my mind and came to my ears again; and was precisely the riff of this song.
For me, the perfect match between bass and guitar is what defines the excellence in a post punk band. The way both lead the songs is something that deserves a notorious prominence in this band, so the beautiful voice of Elsa Drezner and the progressive and solid beats from Pascal Normal fill this whole musical scene that invites you to not keep quiet. The first bass notes at Echo Und Der Spiegel already portray this invitation well. Now Banshee, fill all the euphoria I have felt when I saw this name for the first time; the bass and drums fits like a glove with the first late guitar notes and then the beautiful and strong Elsa's voice.
Although the 80s were the rise of the synths (that left so many songs in our mind), this mini-lp can have a very characteristic sonority of the decade, even without the synths. Another proof of how the bass and guitar fits so well in this songs. They are all great, this disc have a great and notorious post punk/gothic sound for me. The re-recording of Can An Actor Bleed? couldn't sounds better than this album version; the exchange of the drum machine by the drummer proved effective. I point out Lola, The Kinks song, that sounds a lot better than the original version... for me, of course (hahahaha).

Dick Tracey - Talkin' Bout The Future (1986)

Waiting Just For You e E.S.P. são duas ótimas músicas retratando bem o new wave da banda. With Or WIthout You é uma ‘baladinha’ romântica daquelas que ficam mesmo na cabeça (bem, ficou na minha pelo menos) e nela a Debbie Kaplan mostra que além de dividir as letras com o George, ser modelo e baixista, tem também uma bela voz. Basic Combination.

>>> Well, this is not a band that you see in every alley of the internet. But f&¨@, this is really a sequence of songs that leaving nothing to desire to the great New Wave’ bands from the 80s. Let’s put it another way. I would say that anyone could introduce this band to me just saying that it’s a lost album by a great famous band and I would easily believe it. Maybe I’m overreacting and probably I am; and probably I will keep doing this with many other bands that I’ll know thoughout my life but this is a great album, indeed.
This band was formed in the early of the 80s at Philadelphia (thanks Discogs!!!) by George Karras when he left the band Dancer. The keyboardist Jeff Ragan and the ex-model Debbie Kaplan (some people said that she’s a Joan Jett lookalike).
Crashing Into Love makes me wonder in a darkwave influenced band but when you heard the title track, you start to think in another way. Slave For Nothing is a slow song but not least estimated. Waiting Just For You and E.S.P. show very well the new wave of the band. With Or Without You is more a romantic song that stick in your mind (well, stayed in my head at least) and you can see that Debbie Kaplan besides being an ex-model, co-songwriter and bassist, she have a very beautiful voice. Basic Combination. This song takes away all you will to stand still and makes you want to start dancing in the house/garage/stopthecarinthemiddleofthestreetpumpupthevolumegetoffthecarandstartdancing. Besides the great beat, I would say that this song have a great instrumental, simple but touching. No more words, just enjoy this great sound.

If anyone have some band photo, send me! Thank you in advance.
