Marbre Noir - Salvation Rites 12" (1986)

Dando seguimento às postagens anteriores, mais uma prova dos bons sons vindos da Itália mas com um fim prematuro. Aqui no Seu Arsenal já mostramos o Chromagain, hoje é a vez da Marbre Noir que fez um som na linha do gothic rock e lançaram apenas este EP que trago hoje. Esta banda que conseguiu expressar bem os elementos que absorviam da cena dark (não só italiana), tinham uma característica particular em comparação com as da época, sua maior parte era formada por mulheres com excessão apenas do guitarrista Fabio Vicenti e do baterista Fabrizio Spera.

Este foi o único registro deixado pela banda, lançado pelo selo Mantra Records em '86. Apenas deliciem mais este som.

>>> Following on from previous posts, one more proof of the good sounds come from Italy but with a premature end. Here in Seu Arsenal we have shown the Chromagain, today is the time of the Marbre Noir that made a sound in the line of gothic rock and just released this EP that I bring today. This band that expressed well the elements absorved from the dark scene (not just from Italy), had a particular characteristic compared with others of the same epoch, most of the band was formed by women only exception of the guitar man Fabio Vicenti and the drummer Fabrizio Spera.

This was the only record left by the band, released by Mantra Records in '86. Just enjoy this sound.

Near Paris - Near Paris 12" EP (1985)

Mais uma banda estadunidense, da cidade de Columbus, Ohio. E mais uma das bandas que eu lamento por terem lançado apenas um EP, e com apenas 4 músicas! Faziam um som na linha do new wave/synthpop e foram bem populares na cena alternativa de Columbus durante a época em que existiram. Tocavam em galerias de arte e outros locais ligados a arte de alguma forma. Neste ano, através da parceria entre a Medical Records e o blog Crispy Nuggets foi lançado um LP contendo as faixas deste EP e outras que também foram gravadas na época mas não foram lançadas. Em Outubro de 2012, Gerald F. Nelson morreu antes mesmo de ter sido completada a produção deste LP.

>>> One more USA band, from Columbus, Ohio. And one more band that I regret having released just one EP, and with only 4 tracks! They made a sound in the new wave/synthpop line and were popular in the alternative scene from Columbus during the band's existence. They played in art galleries and other art venues linked in some way. In this year, by a partnership between Medical Records and Crispy Nuggets blog was released a LP containing the EP tracks and other that was recorded in same time but not released. October 2012, Gerald F. Nelson passed away even before the production of LP has been complete.

Every Secret Thing - Every Secret Thing 12" EP (1989)

Com essa banda inicio algumas postagens sobre bandas com uma certa particularidade: lançaram apenas um único EP e sumiram neste mundo. 

Não há muito o que falar sobre esta banda estadunidense. Apenas que fizeram um bom som com influências do deathrock, post punk e também algumas pitadas do gótico (a voz lembra a de Peter Murphy ou é apenas uma impressão?). Músicas bem arranjadas (gostei do baixo!), uma voz que se encaixa com os instrumentos... Este EP foi gravado em '89, produzido e lançado pela própria banda. Sem informações sobre a cidade de origem, porém, este EP foi gravado em Emeryville, Califórnia, no Dancing Dog Studios.

>>> With this band I start a few posts about bands with a some particularity: released just an only EP and gone in this world.

There's not so much to talk about this U.S. band. Only they made a good sound with influences by the deathrock, post punk and gothic too (the voice seems of Peter Murphy or it's just an impression?). Good arrangement of the songs (I like the bass!), a voice that fits with the instruments... This EP was recorded in '89, produced and released by the band. No informations about the hometown, but this EP was recorded in Emeryville, CA, in the Dancing Dog Studios.

South Of No North - South Of No North (1989)

Mais uma vez, a cena dark grega sendo bem representada. A South Of No North foi criada em Novembro de '83 em Atenas, e tiraram seu nome do livro de Charlles Bukowski. Na Grécia, muitos os consideram a melhor banda de darkwave/gothic rock de lá. Eles possuem todas as influências imagináveis para o seu estilo, como a Joy Division e Bauhaus, ambas são bem presentes no primeiro álbum de '84 lançado pela Creep Records, o Lacrimae Christi. Talvez só eu tenha notado uma influência vinda da The Mission (o vocal principalmente, que nota-se bem diferente do primeiro álbum, por exemplo) neste último álbum deles, que vos trago hoje, o homônimo South Of No North. Este álbum contém alguns doces 'backing vocals', mais um destaque do álbum. Destaco aqui "Angel", "Silver Rain" e "Pro Cabaret"; as duas primeiras são músicas um tanto animadas, diferentemente de "Pro Cabaret" onde há toda a densidade do darkwave da banda. "The House Of Breath" é quase uma canção para dormir, uma calma melodia dedilhada acompanhada da voz forte do Andreas.

Talvez a última aparição da banda foi no festival Elfentantz II em 2003 na Grécia (?), onde fizeram uma reunião exclusiva para tocar no festival. Este álbum possui duas versões, mas a única diferença em ambas é a ordem das músicas. Sem mais, enjoy it!

>>> One more time, the dark scene from Greece well represented. The South Of No North was formed in November '83 in Athens and they took their name from a book of Charlles Bukowski. In Greece, a lot consider them the best darkwave/gothic rock band. They contain all the imaginable influences to your style, like Joy Division and Bauhaus, both are clearly present in the '84 first album released by Creep Records, the Lacrimae Christi. Maybe only me has observed an influence from The Mission (mainly the voice, which is quite different from the first album, for example) in this last album, that I bring you today, the homonym South Of No North. This album contains some sweet backing vocals, another feature from album. I highlight here "Angel", "Silver Rain" and "Pro Cabaret"; the first of this two are lively songs, differently of "Pro Cabaret" that brings all the density of the band's darkwave. "The House Of Breath" is almost a lullaby song, a calm melody accompanied by the strong voice of Andreas.

Maybe the last appearance of the band was at the festival Elfentantz II in 2003 in Greece (?), where they made an exclusive meeting to perform at the festival. This album have two versions but the only diference is the order of songs. Enjoy it!

Rainy Days Factory - It's Your Time EP (2011)

Posso dizer que me impressionei com o som desta banda. Vejo aqui fortes influências do Joy Division (seria "See The Light" uma influência direta?) e influências variando do post punk a música experimental, com uma atmosfera realmente envolvente. Aliás, acho que foi bem isso que eles queriam passar com suas músicas. E conseguiram.

"As nossas músicas são dedicadas aos loucos, aos inadaptados, aos rebeldes, aos agitadores, aos que colocam pinos redondos em buracos quadrados, aos que veem as coisas de forma diferente e que não gostam de regras."; consta no site oficial da banda.

A gravação do EP foi feita na Fábrica de Pólvora (Portugal), da forma como antigamente eram gravados as canções para os vinis, de forma direta, ao vivo. Mas este não foi o único benefício da Fábrica para a banda. Além de terem usado alguma espécie de auditório com uma excelente acústica para a gravação, a própria Fábrica deu nome a banda, junto a chuva que caía do lado de fora da mesma durante as gravações.

Sem mais, esta é uma banda que ainda vai (deve!) escrever um bom nome na cena underground e, baseado neste primeiro EP, posso dizer que podemos esperar muita música boa vinda das terras portuguesas.

>>> I can say that I was impressed with the sound of this band. I see here strongs influences from Joy Division (could be "See The Light" a direct influence?) and influences varying from post punk to experimental music, with a really really surrounding atmosphere. By the way, I think that was it they wanted transmit with your songs. And they succeed.

The set recordings of this EP was made in the Fábrica de Pólvora (Portugal), like the old vinyls were recorded, directly, live. But this is not the only help from Fábrica to the band. They used any kind of auditorium with an excellent acoustic for recording, the own Fábrica gave name to the band, together with the rain that was falling in outside during the recordings.
No more, this is a band that still will (and shall) write a good name in the underground scene and based on this EP, I can say that we can expect a lot of good music coming from the portuguese lands.

Days Of Sorrow - Remembering The Days 12" / A Thousand Faces 12"

Na Alemanha surgiu esta banda que produzia um som na linha do synthpop, mesclando com o minimal synth/wave, com influências do post-punk ("Travel", "Mysterious Eyes") e um baixo marcante. Se formou com membros das pequenas cidades próximas a Dortmund, na zona de Westfalia. "Wild World" é o hino da banda. As duas versões apresentadas nos dois EP's são ótimas, não consigo distinguir qual a melhor versão; a versão presente no "Remembering The Days" está mais para o lado minimal synth da coisa. A do segundo EP "A Thousand Faces" adere mais ao synthpop sem deixar de lado as raízes da primeira versão. "War" e "Don't Leave Me Drowning" são canções com uma melodia/letra mais sombrias. "Travel" junto a "Wild World" são as mais conhecidas. Neste segundo EP, a faixa título honra o posto que tomou; "A Thousand Faces (Night-Time)" é uma grande música com uma pegada minimalista e uma letra sobre o cotidiano noturno. No fim da carreira, juntou-se a banda um baterista que os acompanhou em alguns shows, entre eles um na Discothek Memphis de Dortmund, em 16 de Janeiro de '86, que eu postarei em breve. Aproveitem mais este ótimo som perdido dos 80s!

>>> Emerged in Germany, this band produced a sound in the synthpop line, more to minimal synth/wave, with post punk influences ("Travel", "Mysterious Eyes") and a notable bass. Was formed with member from little towns next to Dortmund, in the Westfalia zone. "Wild World" is the anthem of the band. Both versions presents in the 2 EP's are great, I can't tell what the best version; the "Remembering The Days" version is more to minimal synth side. From the second EP have more synthpop sounds with no forgetting the roots of the first version. "War" and "Don't Leave Me Drowning" are song with dark melody/lyrics. "Travel" is another anthem for band. In the second EP, the title track honor the place it has taken. "A Thousand Faces (Night-Time)" is a great song with a minimal beat and lyrics about the night-time. At the end of career, a drummer joined to the band and and follow them in some shows, including one in the Discothek Memphis in Dortmund, at 16 January 1986, that I'll post soon. Foreign Cinema - Non-Synchronous Sound EP (2009)

A Foreign Cinema é uma banda goianiense que habita agora a distante San Francisco nos EUA, nasceu da parceria entre Dave Han e Natalia Silva em 2008. Seu som carrega influências que passeiam entre o Cocteau Twins, The Cure (me remete ao Faith...), Depeche Mode e até mesmo o New Order; tudo isso mesclado com elementos do shoegaze e triphop. A banda iniciou com o Dave Han e Natalia Silva mas logo se juntou a eles Halleia Sadeghi nos teclados. Esta foi a formação do primeiro EP gravado por eles, o Non-Synchronous Sound que trago hoje. Atualmente a formação conta com Brandon Chaves no lugar de Halleia nos teclados e guitarras.

O som deles é facilmente absorvido por aqueles que gostam das bandas citadas acima. Fãs dos 80s e hipsters também são bem vindos. Ao mesmo tempo em que seu som mergulha no 'lado negro' das influências da década de 80, o shoegaze e o triphop trazem uma luz para tudo isso, balanceando o som. A faixa 3 é nada mais, nada menos que uma cover do Depeche Mode, o lado b do single Dreaming Of Me de '81, que eu arriscaria dizer ser melhor que a própria versão original. Recentemente, lançaram seu novo trabalho, o LP Monochromatic disponível para compra aqui, bem como os outros trabalhos. Sem mais, fiquem com mais esta joia desconhecida.

>>> Foreign Cinema is a band from Goiânia (Brazil) located in San Francisco, USA. It was born of the association of Dave Han and Natalia Silva in 2008. Their sound carries influences that passes through the Cocteau Twins, The Cure (make me wonder in Faith...), Depeche Mode and even New Order, all mixed with shoegaze and triphop elements. The band starts with Dave Han and Natalia Silva but soon Halleia Sadeghi joined them on keyboards. This was the line up of the first EP, the Non-Synchronous Sound that I bring you today. Nowadays the line up has Brandon Chaves in place of Halleia.
Their sound is easily absorbed by those who like the bands  previously mentioned. 80's fans and hipsters are welcome too. At the same time Foreign's sound sink in the 'dark side' of the 80's influences, the shoegaze and triphop bring a light to all of it, balancing the sound. The third track is nothing more than a Depeche Mode cover, the b-side of the '81 single Dreaming Of Me, that I would venture to say that's better than the original version. Recently, they released their new work, the LP Monochomatic available here, as well as other works. Enough talk. Take this rare, precious jewel of music and enjoy it.
