O post-punk inglês nunca deixará de me surpreender. Este álbum que trago hoje é, no mínimo, perfeito. Talvez não tão perfeito nos dias de hoje (minto, ainda o é) mas se analisarmos o ano em que ele foi lançado e a genialidade das canções aqui, aí teremos algo perfeito. Genialidade essa expressada tanto na sonoridade como nas letras. Mais na sonoridade do que nas letras, pois na época já haviam grandes letristas de bandas já consagradas no cenário dark. Digo, a forma como as canções eram tocadas, com notas e acordes dissonantes que transmitem uma certa psicodelia no som (Talk Without Words, Midnight Garden e Twilights Pool). Isso tudo sem deixar de lado a influência do post-punk da época. 

Não há, em absoluto, uma música ruim neste disco. Destaco aqui Shrine que tem uma belíssima melodia diferente das demais e para mim a mais bonita do álbum; So This Is Silence ficou em minha mente por diversos dias quando conheci a banda; Midnight Garden é perfeita, a guitarra emana um som contagiante e perturbador que percorre toda a música. Este álbum foi produzido pelo Lol Tolhurst, na época ainda estava com o The Cure. Poderia expressar aqui que para mim este seria o melhor álbum da banda mas deixarei que vocês o julguem. Enjoy it!

>>> The english post-punk never cease to amaze me. This today's album is at least, perfect. Maybe not so perfect in these days (I lie, it still is) but if we take a look to the year that was released and the genius of the songs, we will have something perfect. This genious is expressed in the sonority as well as the lyrics. More on sonority than the lyrics, 'cause in this era had already great lyricists of great bands already enshrined in the dark scene. I said, the way how the songs were played, with dissonant notes and chords transmitting some kind of psychedelia in the sound (Talk Without Words, Midnight Garden and Twilights Pool). All this without forgetting the post punk influence.

There's no bad song in this album. I can point out Shrine with your wonderful melody different from the others and the most beautiful from this album; So This Is Silence stayed in my mind for a while when I met the band; Midnight Garden is perfect, the guitar sounds a catchy and disturbing melody in all the song. This album was produced by Lol Tolhurst from The Cure. I would tell you that this is the best band album for me but I will leave this words to you. Enjoy it!

Mellonta Tauta - Rainbow Melodies (2013)

Esta banda argentina da cidade de Mar del Plata, com influências como Cocteau Twins e This Mortal Coil, apresenta um som extremamente sublime nesse segundo disco lançado depois de quase 20 anos do seu primeiro e, até então, último LP de 1994, o Sun Fell. O nome Mellonta Tauta foi tirado de uma história do grande poeta americano Edgar Allan Poe. Este disco é de uma forma atraente aos ouvidos, algo simples com a doce voz de Karina Altamiranda que se mistura entre as batidas new wave minimalistas, algo com uma melodia mais alternativa/pop sem deixar de lado as raízes da banda. Diria que não haveria melhor título para este álbum que vos trago hoje: Rainbow Melodies.

 Twenty Years After foi a primeira que ouvi e tem uma melodia envolvente, seguido da voz angelical da já citada vocalista em uma forma mais grave, mais operística. Raining House já mostra o outro lado de sua voz, sem deixar de lado a influência minimalista acompanhadas de uma guitarra e um baixo bem “Joy Division”. Live Here Forever é simplesmente perfeita; desde sua introdução simples numa combinação entre a voz e os strings até o ótimo jam (se assim posso dizer) que percorre a música até os últimos minutos, sem contar o arranjo do sax que dá outra vida a esta música. É a música ideal para se ouvir enquanto assiste a chuva cair. A faixa título não é de forma alguma menos atraente, porém, existem ainda melhores neste disco. No mais, apreciem mais este som.

>>> This argentine band from Mar del Plata, with some influences of Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil, has a sound extremely sublime in this second disc released almost 20 years after your first work, the LP Sun Fell. The name Mellonta Tauta was taken from a history by Edgar Allan Poe. This disc is really attractive to ears, simple with the sweet voice of Karina Altamiranda, mixed with the new wave minimal beats, with a alternative/pop melody and preserving the band’s sound from the beginning. I would say there’s no better title for this today’s album: Rainbow Melodies.

Twenty Years After was the first song I’ve heard and have a catchy melody, together with the heavenly voice of the aforementioned singer in a more deep voice, like an opera voice. Raining House presents with another voice type, minimal influences with guitars and a “Joy Division” bass. Live Here Forever is just perfect; since your simple introduction with a combination of voice and strings to the great jam that travel all the music until the last minutes, not to mention the sax. It’s the perfect song to hear watching the rain fall. Enjoy this sound!

Crystal Night - Crystal Night EP (2014)

A Rússia aparecendo pela primeira vez no blog. Uma das melhores (senão a melhor) descobertas deste ano. Esta banda russa da cidade de Barnaul produz um som na linhagem do darkwave, com claros elementos do post-punk e uma base minimalista. São apenas uma guitarra e um baixo acompanhados de uma batida minimalista mas que produzem um grande som.

Contam apenas com este EP lançado em 2014 mas que já mostra muito a respeito do que podemos esperar da banda para um futuro álbum, talvez.

Todas as músicas são excelentes para quem gosta dos estilos citados acima. Posso destacar aqui Waiting For Something e Feel The Pain (que tem uma batida que me lembrou muito Sunrise do New Order); esta última peca por ter apenas poucos minutos de música pois é de fato um som bem contagiante, um convite a pista de dança. Doomsteps possui uma melodia bem sombria, melancólica, e nem por isso deixa de ser um ótimo som. Apreciem sem moderação e espalhem este ótimo som. :]

>>> Russia appearing for the first time here. One of the best (maybe the best) discover from this year. This russian band from Barnaul makes a darkwave sound with some post-punk elements in a minimalist base. They are just a guitar and a bass added to a drum machine but they makes a great sound. Just this EP was released in 2014 and show us what we’ll have in an album in the future (maybe).

All the songs are great songs for those who like gothic/post-punk/darkwave. I can point out Waiting For Something and Feel The Pain (this last have a beat like Sunrise from New Order); the only sin of  Feel The Pain is that it have few minutes, 'cause is a really really catchy sound, an invite to the dance floor. Doomsteps have a dark/melancholic melody but still a great sound. Enjoy and disclose this amazing sound. :]

Segundo Inverno - Segundo Inverno EP (2009)

Uma banda que conquistou e ainda conquista espaço na cena underground do Brasil. Buscando suas influências no minimalismo do post-punk e mesclando com doses experimentais que variam de acordes ‘sujos’ nas guitarras a teclados simples, mas que ganham destaque dos demais instrumentos. Conheci esta banda em meados de 2010 através do seu segundo EP O Homem dos Olhos Cinzas e este EP há uns 2 anos e desde então ele está sempre presente em meus setlists.

Vermelho é uma poesia um tanto abstrata, me remete a luxúria. Viver e Morrer é um dos vícios sonoros (para mim, claro) desse EP (aquela guitarrinha repetindo as simples notas); a letra me remete a um rapaz de coração quebrado e angustiado pelo um desafeto amoroso. Melancolia é uma poesia um tanto quanto obscura sobre as inúmeras fases de uma melancolia, a perseguição de uma melancolia...

A banda hoje trocou a bateria programada por uma bateria acústica e, até onde sei, continua em atividades. Enjoy it!

>>> This band conquered and still winning attention in the Brazil underground scene. With influences from the post-punk minimalism and mixing with some experimental doses of heavy guitars and simple keyboards, but this doses stand out among the other instruments. I met this band by 2010 through this second EP called “O Homem dos Olhos Cinzas” and this homonymous EP two years ago and since then is in my setlists.

Vermelho is a abstract poem, makes me wonder in lust. Viver e Morrer is one of the sound addictions (for me, of course) of this EP (the guitar repeating the simple notes along the song); the lyric brings me a boy with heart broken and visibly worry about some love problem. Melancolia is a poem about the numerous stage of melancholy.

Nowadays the band change the programmed drum for the real drum and keep in activity. For those who like post-punk, enjoy it!

Excès Nocturne - L'Écho des Lumiéres EP (1989)

Excès Nocturne é o tipo de som que se pode esperar vir da França. Com um pé no post-punk, outro no gothic, fazem um som na linha coldwave com um baixo contundente, uma guitarra no estilo Bauhaus/Siouxsie, programações minimalistas e os vocais femininos de Corine Zemny (aka Ariane) que se encaixam perfeitamente ao som proposto. Começaram como um quinteto e logo se transformaram num quarteto e terminaram como um trio, trio este que gravou este belo EP. Tiraram o nome da banda de um filme homônimo que foi exibido certa vez num cinema de bairro. A banda encerrou suas atividades em ’89 porém retornaram em 2006 com os mesmos três integrantes da última formação e em 2009 lançaram um novo EP com 3 novas versões para algumas músicas já lançadas nos trabalhos dos 80s, incluindo uma versão (ótima por sinal) para “Le Soleil S’Est Noyé” deste EP que vos trago hoje. Só posso dizer algo sobre esta banda: ainda bem que voltaram as atividades! Da cidade de Sallaumines para o mundo. Apreciem.

With influences from post-punk and gothic, they made/make a coldwave sound with a bruising bass, guitars like Bauhaus/Siouxsie, minimal programmings and the female voice of Corine Zemny (aka Ariane) that fit perfectly with the sound. They start as a five piece, soon became a four piece and in the end a trio. The trio that recorded this beautiful EP. They took the name of a movie shown in a cinema de quartier. The band split in ’89 but returned in 2006 with the same trio from the last line-up and in 2009 released a new EP with 3 new versions for same songs released at the 80s, included a version (a great version I said) to “Le Soleil S’Est Noyé”. Nouvelle Phénomène - Glory of Romance (2013)

Nouvele Phénomène, do francês, Novo Fenômeno. E, na minha humilde opinião, não deveria ser outro o nome deste verdadeiro fenômeno, algo raro e surpreendente, e justo por isso que esta banda me chamou tanto a atenção. Essa banda sintetiza literalmente o que há de melhor nos 80s. Digo, o que há de melhor no minimal, coldwave, synthpop... Nos primeiros momentos deste disco que vos trago hoje, já percebemos a pesada influência do minimal nas canções. A voz doce e sexy das meninas Angela e Fanni S. que embebedam seus ouvidos cantando canções sobre luxúria, romances perdidos, mágoas, etc., junto as notas dos sintetizadores de Zsolt Dziba que lhe fazem sentir falta dos dias em que nem viveu. Au Fond De Mon Coeur e Secret abrem o disco com estas características acima. Cruel Game foi a primeira canção da banda que ouvi. Amor a primeira 'escuta'. Nela ouvimos algo que nos remete ao coldwave, com aquela batida que faz o corpo não querer ficar parado. Glory of Romance é uma das grandes do disco, não poderia ser diferente para carregar o nome do álbum. Como Cruel Game, essa canção carrega a veia do coldwave. Aliás, em todo o lado B deste disco está bem audível toda a influência, do synthpop ao coldwave, dos 80s. Caresse e Stay With Me são canções que permanecem tocando em sua mente mesmo depois de já terem terminado. Caresse já está na minha pasta de discotecagem desde a primeira audição. Stay With Me é uma música que me faz se sentir feliz por estar vivo. Lhe manda direto para os tempos áureos dos anos 80, quando explodiam as bandas de maiores nomes do Synthpop da década nas discotecas em todas as partes do globo. In my humble opinion there’s no name for describe better this phenomenon, something rare and amazing, and this is why this band called me so much attention. This band synthesizes the best of the 80s. I said, the best in the minimal, coldwave, synthpop... The first moments of this album, we can see the influence of the minimal in the songs. The sweet and sexy voice of the girls Angela and Fanni S. that drunk your ears singing songs about lust, lost romances, heartaches… Together with the synthesizers notes of Zsolt Dziba that make you miss the days you never lived. Au Fond De Mon Coeur and Secret open the disc with this last characteristics. Cruel Game was the first one I’ve heard. Love at first listen. We can hear something that bring us to the coldwave, with the beat that makes the body don’t stay quiet. Glory of Romance is one of the greatest songs from album and couldn’t be in other way to give the album’s name. Like Cruel Game, this song have an amazing coldwave sound. Moreover, in all the B of this album is very audible all influence, from the synthpop to coldwave from 80s. Caresse and Stay With Me are songs that stay in your mind even after have finished. Caresse is already in my DJing folder. Stay With Me is a song that makes me feel happy to being alive. A song that sends you straight to the heydays of the 80s, when the biggest synthpop bands are in constantly play in the discoteques around the world. Martin Dupont - Hot Paradox (1987)

A primeira impressão que tive dessa banda não foi tão boa. Acho que o vocal me era estranho. Há alguns anos atrás esse som não me parecia tão bom aos ouvidos... Não como hoje. Não demorou muito até me afeiçoar a música. Quando ouvi Inside Out, a batida rapidamente me contagiou. Independentemente de qualquer outra coisa, eu precisava escutar mais músicas daquela banda.

Assim conheci o Hot Paradox. Um synthpop mesclado com coldwave e elementos do minimal. Uma bateria programada; ora simples, ora complexa; em meio a loops. Teclados e sintetizadores nos mais variados efeitos e formas preenchendo as músicas. Vocais variando entre a estranha, mas agradável voz de Brigitte Balian e a voz grave de Alain Seghir. O clarinete e o sax completam os efeitos nas canções. E a cereja do bolo: uma banda da França, da cidade Marseilles.

Este álbum possui uma das capas mais exóticas que eu já vi. He Saw The Light foi o primeiro vício, justo por aquela batida que te transmite aquela vontade de não ficar parado. Full Moons And Mouths idem; mas com uma batida um pouco mais complexa. Para os fãs dos 80s e em especial do coldwave, synthpop ou minimal essa banda será um prato cheio. No arquivo encontra-se a versão do CD.

>>> The first impression I had of this band isn’t so good. I think the voices were strange. A few years ago this sound is not so good to my ears… Not as nowadays. It didn’t take long for me and I get attached myself to their music. When I heard Inside Out, the beat rapidly infected me. Regardless of anything else, I needed to listen more songs of that band.

So I knew the Hot Paradox. A synthpop mixed with coldwave and minimal elements. A programmed drums; sometimes simple, sometimes complex; with some loops. Keyboards and synthesizers with the most various effects and forms filling the songs. Vocals ranging from the strange sweet voice of Brigitte Balian and the ‘bass’ voice of Alain Seghir. The clarinet and sax complete the effects line up. And the icing on the cake: a French band from Marseilles.

This album have one of the most exotic front covers I've ever seen. He Saw The Light was the first addiction, ‘cause that beat will make you not stand still. The same to Full Moons And Mouths. The 80s fans and those who like of coldwave, synthpop and minimal sounds will really really like this band. This is the CD version of this album. Enjoy it!
